HELP!! 13 years 6 months ago #31481

Does anyone have any idea how to remove the flywheel on a mercury mark 55e? Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Once you have removed the flywheel nut (15/16" socket required) you will need a flywheel puller.
There are (3) threaded holes equally spaced around the center circle on the top surface of the flywheel.
I believe they will have 1/4 NC or 1/4 SAE (NF) threads and need to be used to secure the puller to the flywheel.
Then place a brass 'bunyon' between the crankshaft end and the center bolt of the puller and get busy.
If it hasn't been removed for a long time - it will require a lot of pressure via the puller before the flywheel 'pops' off.
There are other back yard ways to do it, but this is the correct way.

I also recommend threading the flywheel nut back on a few threads so that when that flywheel pops it or the puller doesnt whack you in the face...they do fly now and then

A 'brass bunion' is just a piece of brass round stock that I put between the end of the crankshaft and the center puller cap-screw so that it is the softest metal in the works and will take punishment without allowing damage to the end of the crankshaft.
It probably has an official name, but I just know tool names like sledge hammer and EBFH (even bigger * hammers)

I think I have some useable hammers I mean pistons. I can get a look at them by tomorrow night and send a photo if you like.

it feels good to wack things with a hammer!

Jim,
If you don't fine enough pistons, etc - write to me direct and let me know.
I just parted out a 600 and a couple 55s so I might have a couple too.
The key phrase here is 'might' as I didn't look very closely at the pistons - just put 'em in a bin.
A Mark 25 and a Mark 75 would also have the desired pistons.

Thank you Doc. I will let you know I am 99.9% sure I have a set on rods. The rings I may or may not have and I think I also have main and rod bearings (NOS)

Not sure I'll check back here soon but just wondering if your sure you need pistons as you weren't sure how to remove a flywheel? :)

after close inspection of the Mark 55 block I have I only see one piston I would feel comfortable about parting with. there are smaller pistons in the box as well but I think they are from a Mark 30. i didn't write them down but I can post the casting numbers off of these parts later.
I have reed cages, cranks, blocks, etc....
