TOPIC: Shift Shaft Merc 500.

Hey everyone!

So I have a '68 Merc 500 that I rebuilt the power head, gear case and water pump on. We were all excited and did some test runs in the tank, when all of a sudden, it wouldn't shift out of Nuetral.

Turns out the shift shaft was poo. The gear case end was all rusted.

I'm wondering if someone might know where I may locate one?

Anyway, hope it's ok to post this in this section, and thanks for taking the time to read this.

I BELIEVE it is a short shaft.

Depending on where you are many dealers would have one laying around.Long or short , the gearcase end is likely the same.

Dr Frankenmerc is a board name, just had front page writeup on him. Pretty much check any of the below posts and you will find him replying to the many questions that are asked.Recently bought a wiring harness from him and he went out of his way to accomadate me, with a handfull of emails and diagrams.Then shipping the harness and expecting no payment untill I checked it out!Just taking your word that you will make good on it. Tim C has a shop in Western NY and sponsors a boat show in his locale.I do not see him post much,pretty busy guy,was just at his shop and his inventory is extensive.Both guys are great contributors to the glassic community.
