Latest Motors 13 years 3 months ago #27437

Hey guys how about a set of 1350's in short form! The customer is installing a set of speed masters on them. I am not sure what they are going on though.

the two blue ones looke like a 1500 short and a 1400 short. Did you just get those Doc? Or have you had them awhile?
Conrad

And Darrel, the 1350 is one of the best looking for sure, you've done a great job!

Conrad is correct.
One '72 1400 shorty & one '73 1500 shorty.
I have a couple more '73 1500 shorty(s), but not in this picture.

I just finished my latest FrankenMerc.
(not able to work very long in my shop due to health issues, but it sure feels better being out there putting along compared to being a couch potato.)
I did some work on a 1350 for a guy a while back and besides payment he gave me a recently rebuilt '65 1000 powerhead.
The powerhead still had all the carburetors, fuel pumps, starter & 12v dual point system attached.
I dug around and found enough bits-n-pieces to assemble a complete 1000ss clone.
I swapped out the 12v dual point system with an 1100ss solid state system, making her a 1000ss clone.
I had to index the flywheel, and use a top cowl support with the timing decal to static time the beast for idle & WOT.
She's real clean, and wrapped in a 1000ss wrap & face but doesn't hold a candle to the beautiful jobs Darrell puts out.

You're too modest Thom, most of us would be PROUD to have your work hanging on the back of our boats! 1000SS huh.........someday.

Peter:

After total dis-assembly I just use simple cheap engine degreaser and a pressure washer, nothing fancy!

Re: Latest Motors 13 years 2 months ago #28777

Darrell,
I'm not sure if it shows or not, but the starboard side of my 1000ss wrap has a subtle vertical crease in it.
Any tips in removing the crease before I try and end up making it recycle material??

I have attached a couple more pictures to show the solid state conversion.
Note the use of the small 1500 style coil.
Note installation of a v6 regulator (with built-in rectifier) to keep voltage from spiking.

Thom:

I use a shot bag with a mallet, it does test my patience, but it does work. The style you are showing is a little tougher than the ol style, the small ribs make it a little more challanging.
