Purchased this prop on e-Bay. This one is used but in very good condition with some minor scratches that can be removed, and appears to have factory cupping, which was an option back then. Will sharpen the blades, remove the rough edges, and polish. Like finding an old rare coin. It is part number 48-49630 A3 13 3/4 x 21

Great looking prop for sure! Nothing better looking than a good bronze prop on the back. When I run my 1500 Ill tell you I get more comments from that 21 bronze I have all shined up that I purchased from you than I do with any stainless HP prop I have.

As far as factory cupping goes. I believe the A2/A4 numbers after serial numbers are what designated factory cupped props. Others can confirm this.

Conrad, you are right, the old Mercury prop charts say that Quicksilver Propellers are available in cupped form by substituting "A4" suffix in the part number for the "A1" and "A3".

My prop reads "A3" at the end, meaning that the cupping was not added by the factory.

The prop will go on a light 1971 15' Glastron V-153 with a 1974 in-line 6 cylinder 115 HP Mercury (see my logo picture above). I have three other identical props like this one and they are fast props - GPS 52.9 MPH.

I just knew the A numbers were related to the cupping of the prop. What exactly again does A1, A3, A4 etc... mean? Different degrees of cupping? A few questions for you. Do you run these props on your boats and how do they perform? Is your motor elevated, as Mercury Marine suggests one do to get the best performance? Do you polish them?

Yes, please post pictures of your collection. I know they came in pitches from 20" to at least 26" in 13" and 14" diameters.

Are any for sale?

Believe it or not ....those are the ones just layin around.....lol, some I have trimmed and hammered into ....well spd props etc, Yes I am afraid to count them all. I do sell some times but not alot. some I shine up and others I set outside and let,em turn green........then I use them and see if there is a difference from dull to shiney, Not much difference by the way. The last 2 pics are all McCulloch props for my 75hp tripples.

I have used everything from a palm sander to a dremmel tool, I finaly bought a buffer from sears and it works very nice. I learned to re pitch and cup props for myself useing any thing I could find ending up with a 4lb pound brass hammer in a vice and a nice new brass hammer. It takes alot of time but I enjoy it.
I use several types of polish from the stick kind you can buy a Lowes, but my favorite finish grade is flitz. it comes in a tube and its a paste, It gives it a mirror finish.

To start, I use 120 grit sandpaper on a 4 1/2 inch disc pad attached to a drill to sharpened the blades, touch up imperfections, blend metal, and get out scratches. Make sure you keep the disc moving so as not to take too much metal from any one area. Then I use wet or dry sandpaper from sheets, folded into little sections, and sand by hand, using 220, 320, 400, 600, and possibly 1000 grit. At that point, a cotton buffing wheel attached to a drill can finish to a mirror like shine, using Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish. Flitz is also good, but expensive. Then use the hands and the above polishes to finish the job. Try the Home Depot for a combination of stick grits and cotton wheels. Sand paper for 4 1/2 inch disc pads are hard to fine. 5 inch also work, or cut out the circle from sheets. Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish can be found at car parts stores.

I live in St.Paul, Minnesota with a boating season from May to October.
