Been out shopping again.
70 miles away.
Working out the details.
Also a parts motor.
Mark 78 shorty and a Mark 75 with control(the key is still in it) and matching Kiekhaefer wheel.
More Dir. Rev.
I'm getting good at this.

Little short story.
I was working with this gentleman about a trade for one of my boats for these motors about a month ago. He was on the fence cause he was looking for a turnkey boat.
He bought a boat this past weekend.
Today I got an e-mail from him with these pics.
I called and left a message and an e-mail today, and no response back yet.
I am blue in the face from holding my breath. He is going to sell them, we just need to arrive at a price.
I was waiting for the pics to share here.
We haven't arrived at that happy ending yet.

My blood type is B-positive, so things are going to turn out just fine! :) :)

But a black emblem usually means a 1957 Mark 75 FYI. I like to get the first model year of production. To me its slightly more valuable.

Of course the MK 78 is a 1958, the first and only year of the MK 78.

In 59 it was totally redesigned and was called the MK78a

Good Luck

I attached a pic of my 1957 MK 75 on a Lone Star Malibu

Thanks for the info.
When this deal happens, I will have a pair of the Mark 78's. Tall and short.
I want to snag the 75 because it is the first "Tower".
The guy sent a pic of the id tag on the 78 but is was blurry.
But we already know what it is.
The parts motor is a Dir. Rev. I did not include that pic.
I cannot tell if it is long or short from the pic. But it has the double solenoid and double bendix on the starter.
Looks like you have a couple of great old Mercs there. I am still learning about these, but I am a sucker for a 6 Stack. I am looking forward to hearing mine run as well as yours.

They are fun. Someday when I get older Ill spend my winters painting these old girls up.

The MK 78 with the custom paint job in your photos is a short shaft. THe Mk 75 is at a weird angle an hard to tell. But Id guess the MK 75 is a shortie too. Long shafts are more of a rarity with these motors. There are a lot more shorties out there than longs.

I like the way you increase your piston count! My favorite combo is the sunset orange top tan bottom and black emblem.
It is always surprising how many of these motors surface, gosh they must have either made a ton or no one threw them out.
Years ago I jumped on a few figuring it would be a LONG time to see another...WRONG!
I often thought about a shifting version by using a Mk 55 mid/ lower and being gentle using it or an alternate of using a 700 FGS with the wrap, top cover/face plate swapped on from a Mark 75 or 78. The Mk 55 version would be more stealthy the 700 FGS would be stronger with a more servicable lower. In the end an original is coolest of all, that running backwards is all part of the charm.

Randy could you imagine haveing a DR on a FGS MK 55 tower/lower.

You could go fwd in reverse and reverse in fwd :)

Might get confusing?!:

I recieved an E-mail from the gentleman today.
Are you sitting down
ok, good! Here we go.
I copied and pasted right from the E-mail.
This is the exact quote from him;

Neil
I was at a meeting at the kids school last night so could not take your call. I can be a little busy in the evenings. but I will call you. I will gladly give you those motors if you helped me find someone with one of those boats i listed.

Sam

He is looking for a Black 1967 Sea Ray or Pachanga, or an early Arena Craft with fins or a Chris Craft or Century.
This is gonna be fun! :) There is a Chris Craft and a Century for sale here locally. Depends on the caliber of project he is willing to tackle.

I spoke with the gentleman again tonight.
I had given him info on 3 boats. He has contacted two of them so far and nothing yet.
I asked him what he would do for cash for the three motors and he thought that $250 is what he would have to get. Heck, that's only $83 each. I figure the parts are worth that. The control and steering go with the deal also.
Opinions??

Not if you live in the UK Randy! :( Us Limey's never see them as they were never sold here (Merc didn't start selling here until the 61-62ish). The only ones here would have been brought over by US servicemen working on the US airbases that were plentiful here after WW2 through to the 80's.

Only ever seen them on the internet, maybe I should buy one & ship it back like I did my 1350 shorty . . . :)
