TOPIC: mercury tach question.. 82 90hp

ok i fired up my motor for the first time this year.. and noticed my tach pins the gauge at 8k as soon as the key is turned on.. and isnt working... still looking for the instruction from the tach.. to make sure its wired right.. but from what i seen online. i've got it right.. purple wire pos. + / black neg. - /and gray tach pulse..
need to figure out if the tach took a dump or i'm missing something..

No, the tach has had it. The wiring is correct, time for a new one.

If the tach is vintage and you want to save it, there are companies that can repair/rebuild the tach.

well i guess i'll look for a new one.. no big deal..this one was new the end of last year.. but it was on clearance.. maybe it was bad then.. i installed it after winterizing.. so this was the first time starting it this year..

Have you checked your rectifier? I have heard of a bad rectifier causing the tach to peg.

i'll try that.. i have another one of those on my parts motor.. so that would be a quick swap..
