TOPIC: Ethanol Carnage

Ethanol Carnage 9 years 2 months ago #114429

I think this is the worst example I've come across of the damage ethanol can cause in a carburetor.
The story was that the mid '70s 500 quit running a couple years ago, was left unattended, then brought to the Mercury Magic Shoppe for a resurrection when simply fresh gasoline was primed up, and the poor beast failed to fire.
Fortunately I had a set of clean replacement carburetors and a fuel pump assembly for the beast.

Is that what I think it is? Is that build up in the fuel bowl? If so what is it and how is the gas doing that? Is it breaking down the metal in the carb?

Would that be from e85 or the ten percent blend?

I'm pretty sure it was the less than 10% ethanol.

Even more unfortunate is that it's not just the carbs. A two stroke gets it lubrication from the fuel, right? So when the orifices begin to plug up and the motor starts to run lean, guess what else it isn't getting enough of!

I'm fortunate to have a gas station nearby that sells ethanol free gas. By nearby I mean an hour drive each way. I still make the trip filling up six six gallon fuel tanks (and the car while I am at it). Use it for the Merc, snow blower, and generator. And oh by the way, my 2001 Honda Accord V6 runs noticeably better with E0 gas. I thought I was just imagining it until my son came home, not being aware of the situation, and asked if I had tuned up the car.

We live 25 miles east of Charlotte, NC, within 30 minutes of 3 lakes (Tillery, Badin, and High Rock). If I want to drive 45 min to an hour, I can go to Lake Norman or Lake Wylie on the west side of Charlotte. With all of this water, we have many options for ethanol free fuel. Only problem is they charge up to $1.00 more per gallon (but the peace of mind is worth it). :cheer:
