Before you touch a screw on that thing spring for a GENUINE Mercury repair manual, no Selock or Clymer clones, and study the procedures for your engine thoroughly and completely. If you feel you can take it on then start with the basics, compression, spark, lower unit lube, impeller etc and move on from there. Chances are you are going to have to go deep into this thing and spend some real bucks but it will be worth it. They are a Hell of an engine and a great find. Let me warn you however they are very addictive.

Looks like you have a 1955 Mark 55.
While waiting for your manual,...Take the prop off for safety.
Then take all (4) sparkplugs out, tilt the beast up, and spray CRC Fogging Spray (NAPA, West Marine, etc, etc) into each sparkplug hole.
Spray the lube both up towards the tops of the cylinders as well as the bottoms & sides.
Once the cylinders have been fogged, allow the beast to soak in the spray a couple days & then slowly begin rotating the motor with the rewind rope.
If the rewind rope comes out without turning the motor, or once it is out it won't rewind in, remove the top hat and lube the rewind components with PB Blaster, Kroil, Fluid Film, or some other penetrant-lubricant.
Once these steps have been accomplished, proceed with compression readings and testing for spark.
Definitely plan on replacing the water pump impeller before any attempts to start the beast.
The Mercury Service Manual you'll want to track down is number:
C-90-25500
They typically show up on Ebay, so use that number to watch for one.
Feel free to post any questions - we are all here to share knowledge. No question is a dumb question when Mercury related.
