Found a Mercury 650XS in Germany last week and bought it yesterday.A friend picked it up in Berlin and I will collect at a boatshow at the end of Februar. From the pictures that were in the advertising I noticed that 3 big holes were drilled in the front cover probably to get more air intake for the carbs. I like to bring it back to original so i hope someone has a front cover for sale or knows of one for sale.

The seller told the motor was extremly loud. Is this correct with this motor or do i have to repair/replace something?

Thanks, Taco.

Hello Dave,
I don`t think it`s a race motor. It has a normal short shaft with a standard gearcase. It seems to have no internal fuel pump but i will check when the motor is at home.

Will sent pictures asap. I think there was a large "racing scene" in the early days in Germany. I recently found the 1500 J block, a Mark 30H, 55H { both not purchased } and 2 650 XS. A friend bought a 1500XS recently in Germany. All much more expensive than the USA motors but al least available!

The 650 XS is a race motor and unlike the 1500xs and 850xs it has little in common with the stock motor of similar "number" . The 650 xs is basically half of a Merc Twister of the same vintage. It makes 90 hp, has three carbs, a special reed front crankcase cover, different top hood, lower unit etc. A rare motor worth getting if some of these specialty parts are on it.

Hi,

Came home from the boatfair in Germany this morning and picked up the 650XS motor. As promissed some pics of it. Also bought an 850XS with the original Low water Intake gearcase. I need a propeller for the 650XS but like to be advised what I need . I will use the motor on an Aristo craft Torpedo 14 probably 450 lbs.

I've never seen one of these 650XS' run for very long before cooking some part or another. The 850XS is much more reliable and long term fun and can be cranked up high with the low water pickup. Here's the original '77 brochure.

Thanks for the nice brochure! The more I read about the 850XS the better it gets. I thought the 650 was the motor to have for my Aristo craft but it will probably work better on a real race boat. With only 5 Hp less and more reliable I better hook up the 850XS.

Re:I found a Mercury 650XS 9 years 8 months ago #106824

The 650xs was a full race motor on a 15 inch mid. The 700x was on a special extra short mid.

The 850xs is just a standard 850 short with a low water pick up lower unit and red stickers. Very reliable motor and parts are everywhere. They will weigh a good amount more than a 650xs tho..

The 650xs and 700x were very unique motors. Probably not good for a daily driver.

I just noticed the 850XS I have is a long shaft version. It is made in Belgium and the serial number match the 1977 version. It is a very heavy motor and not to use on my Aristo Craft. The 650Xs does not have a plug for the electrical wiring and no fuel pump. The required fuel of 105 octane is not available over here so I better try to trade for another nice motor. Is it possible to run a Mark 78H instead of a standard Mark 78 on an Aristo Craft Torpedo 14?

Re:I found a Mercury 650XS 9 years 8 months ago #106877

A MK78H or MK75H will not do much good in the boat pictured. How long is this boat? The MK 78 is probably a pretty good match.

boat is a 14ft aritocraft torpedo. I ran one when new with a mark 75 good choice should run 45-50mph without a problem.

With the MK78 the Aristo craft runs 78 km/h about 49 mph? I like to try the 650XS or 850XS on this season`s "vintage boat racing" event in Germany. Do you experts know of one of these motors bring more top speed than the MK78?

Earlier I noticed that the 850XS shaft is longer than the 650XS shaft so i thought the 850 is a long shaft. But next to the 1974 short shaft 1500 J block motor it has the same lenght. The "fin" on the 850 LWPU is bigger than my other motors. Can it be that this makes it visually long shaft but still is a short shaft?

I have a few questions also about the 650XS. The best fuel I can get is leaded 98 octane. I found some liquid to boost the octane up to 102/ 104 . Is this useable or will it "destroy" the motor? What is the mixture rate for this motor. I only found some specs for the 650X but that seems to be the real race motor.

Any info is much appriciated.
Thanks, Taco.

Re:I found a Mercury 650XS 9 years 8 months ago #107008

The MK 78 and the 850xs are both 66 cubic inches.

The MK 78 is probably 30lbs lighter than the 850 tho....

The 850xs will be able to run more modern props that will make the boa run faster and the low water pick up withal allow the motor to be raised up for more speed.

The 650s may put out the same HP or a bit more than the 850, but its less cubic inches and should be used on a light boat. Not saying it won't run fast if propped correctly. Its just going to be a lot harder to do. And messing with those 3 carbs all the time may be a headache.

I think the 850xs raised up with a good prop would easily get you into the 55 mph range. Maybe faster. The newer props make lots of differnce.

Now as far as feeding the 650xs I'm not sue about octane. The compression ratio is the same as a 1500 inline 6. Maybe the timing is jacked up? Merc recommended 100LL aviation fuel which I have run before.

Thanks Milkdud for your explination. I will try the 850Xs on the boat. Sadly it is a very ugly motor { the one I have } but if it runs well it will be worth to have it restored. As I am not technical at all the 650XS is no longer an option.

I asume the 850 Xs will run on normal gasoline {leaded }? with a 1:50 mixture?

Taco, what are you going to do with the 650xs? Is it for sale?

I do not want to sell the 650Xs for cash but will consider a trade for a fully restored, perfect running motor that will match my Aristo craft.

Had the 850 Xs running an hour ago on the stand. The impellor needs to be replaced as no water came out of the pie hole. Probably worth a restoration?

Did the engine get hot? The exhaust manifold cover will get hot quickly if there is no water circulating thru the block.

The telltale might be plugged, you can use air pressure to blow thru the hose to see if it's clear.

Probably a good idea to change the impeller anyway, it's cheap insurance.......ed

According to my 1976 Mercury brocure, the 650XS uses 93 octane premium fuel and a 32:1 oil ratio due to the 7000 RPM rating. 650XS vs. 850XS depends on hull design and weight. Put both on a 17ft Checkmate, the gears and larger prop diameter would give the 850XS the edge. On a 45SS Tunnel hull, I would give the smaller gearcase and higher RPM 650XS the nod. Match the hull and motor to their designs and happiness will follow.

Thanks for the info. I bought the 650XS as a good running motor { seller said }. It is hard to find a vintage tunnel hull over here if not impossible. I regulary check the internet for a nice Magnum missle. That will probably work with the 650 Xs or 1500 J block.

I wouldn't buy a Magnum Missle if I were you. They're a heavy tank that wont lift well until you get at least 150 h.p. I know a guy that had one with a 125 Merc and it was a slug. That motor ran 10 mph faster on a Hydrostream Viper.. He sold it to a guy that tried a 175 on it and it would finally lift out of the water and go but it cracked the transom before he could get it set up right.

Check out Conrad's Carlson Contender 1500XS video, it's very exciting!

Here's a couple of Carlson Challenger vids, check out the stacks in that first one!

From the Fiberglassics library:

www.fiberglassics.com/library/Carlson

This guy has a Challenger with 1500XS, beautiful rig! Asking $15,995, it was listed on eBay & didn't sell. Maybe it's the same one you saw.

Hi Ed,
I have seen the video`s of Conrads boat/motor many times. The blue challenger is the one i saw but after reading some comments about the seller, owens marine, I have to let it pass by. International transactions do only work when both , buyer and seller are full reliable.

Hi Robby,

It is hard to tell what I paid for it as I bought more motors as a package deal. May have been around $ 1,500.00 Do not know if it is cheap or expensive, just liked to have one.

Reason asked is a post on S+F from a guy overseas too with a 650X not in perfect shape, no cowling, and wants $20,000? Thats a little stiff in my book!
