TOPIC: Old Mercury Gas tank

Well I removed the Fuel outlet from my 6 gallon tank to replace the gasket and it will not go in again.
The float is hitting something and the metal ring underneath fell off. I still have the ring but it isan.t staying up against the bottom of the tank. I also suspect that the tank is baffled as the cork float hits something when you try to move it towards the Tank inlet.
This five minute job has already taken an hour. Is there a procedure for getting the float in again. My service manuel has nothing in it about this that I can find..
Any help will be appreciated.
On edit I found That a couple push clips fixed the retainer ring. but this is all the furthe the fitting will go in. i also know I need to finish cleaning the outside of the tank.

I think there are 2 screws that hold the ring on . there is a baffle the float goes over it when installing. if you have a problem with the ring just use the screws to hold it in place while you glue it in place and it dries. then take the screws out and complete the installation.

Thanks Dave. Ias trying to go around the side and over the top. Now that I know it is over the top I can concentrate on only the one way.
