No it is not. We are on the Harris Chain of lakes in Florida all fresh water. I used epoxy as a sealer but the color is base clear. This boat will not sit or dock in water for extended days or weeks.

Glad to see you back at it Dave, the Playmaster is looking good. I hit several of those "mental blocks" during the last project (GT150), just had to take a few days away from the project then power through them! Looks like you're back on track now, carry on brother! ;)

Being a '93 flood survivor, we're not sure of her nationality, but she looks Fin-ish. Maybe someday she will be Fin-ished. When she is, she'll be one of only 5 or 6 of that model nationwide that I found mentioned on-line ten years ago. The most beautiful being one in "blue" in Washington state that had a jetski motor conversion. There was a video of it doing donuts a long time back. Keep it up Dave, yer doin' a hull of a job.

The hull-a-days are almost over. Might get first round of glue and glass done today.

Thinking about decommissioning my first real boat a 76 Glastron with a recently serviced 55 Johnson. The boat has a weakened transom and some leaks in hull. I do have my 1959 Mercury but pull start and no alternator. Not cool guy original but daily driver useable. Just have to figure how to get rid of plastic steering wheel and use one of my vintage ones.

I stuck 'Four Year mamma'in the way back. I plan on bringing back out and start working on her again. I found my old rope style wheel fits my newer steering. I only have six months to finish cause "five year mamma" does not work!

Could not install steering till engine was attached. I have decided just to get this project floating. So no more restoring just assembling what I have.

I am at point to say screw it on this project. Time to put boat numbers on. But I did not like some areas of the white hull. If I had to work for me I would quit!So what the heck.....I may as well clean up hull and shoot some more paint. Tomorrow I can put numbers on !

What makes me angry is too many other obstacles. This project taking way too long. Then I had to leave outside covered but still assorted damage occurred. I wanted to do something much better. I take my glasses off and ten feet away it looks very nice. I am thankful for this forum. I see others have had same struggle and then I look at "amazing boat pics". I just have to get this in our boat slip, right and wrong. If I like it I can redo what ever. It just has got to be in WATER !!!!!!!!

Dave, just look back at your first post, pictures of what you started with and where you are now. Took me over five years to do my Sabre but in the end it was well worth it. Some of the boats you see were not in the condition that you started with. Have a friend that bought a boat over fours years ago so he could take his daughters out on the water. The girls are now in college and the boat is still being worked on. He bought another "beater" just to tool around with while doing his good restore. Use the boat for the rest of the season and then putts with it during the off season. It's not a perfect world. An award winning glass boat now sits in my workroom not being used.

OK, now that's said I'm going to dump a little on you. That steering wheel you have, the one that's molded to look like a rope?, If you look close you'll see some marks where the "rope" meets the "t" area. There probably were some chromie things there, the glue failed to hold them in place. Took me over two years to find them. I used minwax stain to make it look like a rope.
Not a good picture but you can get the idea.

Take a breather from your project, use it as is and then when the frustration wanes go back at it.

Hey Dave,
To you…. Your “mistakes” stick out like a hairy mole above the upper lip.
To me…. your “mistakes” look like a snowshoe hare in a blizzard !

I think your boat looks fantastic !!!! I wish I could do work like you did !!!!

Keep at it !

Re:1958 Glass Magic Playmaster restoration/repair 8 years 8 months ago #113886

The low resolution pics make everything look perfect. I am glad I freshened up the hull before numbers. I try to fight too many battles at a time and get a bit discouraged. Then I realized as I looked at the fins that I am one of the few in the World that have such a cool toy. Of course now I have to spend years looking for some steering wheel chrome!Dammit!! LOL!! Thanks Dave

I gave up. Decided to sell......WTF there is a Playmaster for sale on Ocala fla craigslist. Contacted owner and may of helped in his decision not to sell. so...........The heck with all the advice and I started up the engine. Darned thing runs great. It did take like a 150 friggin pulls. I know I need to replace water pump impeller but I am amazed at how well it runs. Nice gear transition too. So I have to finish this Four Year Mamma!!

Mr. Wave, it's time to find a vintage trailer. There should be a few Gators in your back yard from the look of it. Your instincts are right. Just put some numbers on it ( stick them on with tape, so they can be removed, the way KevFin does it ) and get it wet. Just remember the transom plug in all the excitement. (even the great KevFin forgot the plug the first time he tried to run the Sea Lark last year and that restore took even longer than yours).

Dave "We're here from the gov't and here to help you"

Just thought I'd throw that in...
For what it's worth, in my search for those steering chromies I picked up three, had to buy a trashed wheel that had them on. Now I have two sitting as "spares" if you're interested. When I was looking a few years ago some jerk on ebay wanted $50. apiece, thought they were so rare. Shoot me a PM from this site. $5 apiece + cheapest mailing.
Otherwise keep searching craigslist or ebay, they do show up rarely.
That POS wheel I picked up happened to be attached to a junker boat. Got the chrome, hardware, 65hp Rude (runner) and trailer parted out and sold for more than I paid for the whole shebang.

I think your project is fantastic. Don't let a "honey do" list keep you from tinkering. Patience is key.

PS, I did sell the award winning boat to a fella in San Antonio :)

Nice and I did pm you. The move down here was incredibly more difficult then I had anticipated. I have to store other things and it kills me having the boat under a cover. But finally catching up and might have an indoor spot soon too. So the project moves forward.

Re:1958 Glass Magic Playmaster restoration/repair 8 years 6 months ago #115739

I made a mistake and covered floor seam with fiberglass. The mistake was putting it over paint. Then I wondered if I did the hull seam properly. If I did that wrong it would mean redoing cutting top off. So I lost a lot of interest in project. It cooled down nicely in Florida and I decided it was time to face my fears. Floor cleaned up easily. Laying down on the floor with grinders I attacked seam of hull halves. All good as I had ground the old glass before fiber glassing first layer. I roughed everything up again and added another layer of really heavy glass. I do not remember what density but it took many ounces of resin to saturate. I could not add controls and steering till I knew I could trust the strength of seam. So now I have multiple layers and a bead of 5200. I should be good to go.

Dave, thanks for finishing something that we started from a Junk Yard in Hardin, IL but could have never finished. My only question is that you decided not to use the beautiful Glass Magic molded aluminum steering wheel. Seems like proudly displaying the maker would have been a bonus, especially if it ever gets judged.

Re:1958 Glass Magic Playmaster restoration/repair 8 years 6 months ago #116250

The cast wheel has a square mounting hole. I am using a mid 70's steering and it has a round with keyway attachment. I do not see entering in any judged shows this round.
Progress... the steering is almost finished being trial fitted. The Quick Silver controls are now connected and trial fitted also!!!!
Ready for a boat seat and friggin twelve pack!!!
