TOPIC: control cables

I recently got an 78 chrysler 85 hp outboard and am having trouble timing the shifter cable with the throttle cable. the throttle cable will clear the shifter on acceleration both forward and reverse, but when going back to nuetral the throttle cable never pulls clear of the shifter to get back to nuetral causing it to bind. any suggestions?
