I got the first coat of paint on the deck of the Glasspar today-

It is finally starting to look like a boat again...

The red paint is going to take 3-4 coats to cover well, and don't expect it to get done TOO fast, I don't have the mad skills that John does!

Besides, this paint takes 18-24 hours between coats.

I've been waiting a LONG time to see this color on there :)

Thanks, John... I tried to get a close match to the original red that glasspar used, And this is close- Or at least close enough :)

It's called 'Fire Engine', Which is about right!

I've got a second coat on now-

It looks better than the photo, I used my cell phone camera since that's what I had handy. It's starting to cover well, and the gloss is GREAT.

There was only one 'sag' that I could find, and a drip here and there, I think I'm getting used to the sprayer. I am using a HVLP turbine gun, which has been pretty cooperative for the most part. I have found out what a PITA it is to keep spray equipment clean, though!

The non-skid on the fwd deck will be White. I primed the deck in white first, then masked that area off, then primed the red areas with red oxide primer. Once I'm done with the red, I'll go back and paint the non-skid white. I think I'll roll the paint on the white area, though- Since it has a molded in texture, I don't think it'll matter if it's sprayed or rolled, and I won't have to worry about overspray!

its looking good buddy,i tried to use hvlp guns, but all they did was splatter,so i went back to old school siphon guns, you sure are doing great with them though.becareful rolling on the white so it doesnt leak under the masking, but im sure yu already know that just by looking at the fantastic job your doing, have fun with it,john.ps kep up on the updates im following it closely.i love seeing it all come together.

Thanks, John... Yeah, I have had problems with paint 'leaking' under tape in the past- I usually make SURE I've got the edge of the tape down tight, and also know that there is no substitute for good masking tape, either.

I'm about ready for a third coat now- Here's a better shot of it-

Coat #3 is on- And it's really looking good now!-

It'll still need another coat, just to even out a few areas, but I am happy with it so far. It's EXACTLY the color I was looking for. This coat went on better than the last, I think I'm finally getting a handle on the sprayer- Just in time, too :)

Why is it that bugs LOVE fresh, wet paint so much??

Thanks, John...

That "Mobile sawhorse" comes in really handy. I've got two garages- One on the main floor, and another in the basement, and this allows me to move the deck easily from one to the other... My basement serves as my art studio as well as a boat shop from time to time- It has a 9' Garage door on one end, so I can get boats in/out easily... My Custom Craft is down there now-

patiently waiting her restoration. As you can see, I also have her on wheels so I can move it around as required, the cradle is on mover's dollies. Makes it REALLY easy for me to handle, even alone. I've got a similar rig for the Glasspar, too.

Four coats on now. Just about everything is covered well, there are a few spots that I might want to hit again, just to be sure.... But, overall it's looking good!

I cut & buffed an area on the motor well to see how it would turn out-

If I can get it all to look this good, I'll be happy!

The red is done- At least the application part of it. Next, Sanding, more sanding, then polish.

I got a coat on the white, too- It needs 1-2 more-

I've got my vinyl samples, too- So I'll be ordering seat material soon!

The new job has been getting in the way a bit- 14 hour days don't leave much time for the boat. But, I've been getting some sanding in! I have the whole thing done with 1000 grit, next comes the 2000 grit.

I did a little test area to see how it was going to buff out-

I hit that area with buffing compound, then polishing compound. The cell phone pic doesn't really do it justice- It's got some shine to it!

Now, I just need to find the time to get the rest of it done :)
