TOPIC: sealing my temporary drain tubes

sealing my temporary drain tubes 11 years 7 months ago #77771

ok guys you all have created a monster in me and my boat. the question of the day is i bought copper tubing to plug my drain tubes in my transom until the seacast sets up then i can form my permanent tubes in. i got the 5200 sealer to hold the tubes in place, the Question is will i be able to remove the sealer and tubes when the time comes or should i use another sealer for temporary jobs. ??????????? i am going to use wax on the tubes so i can remove them , i thought about plain duct tape, the seacast is not really runny so that might work and then use the 5200 for the final tube installation . any ideas

Billy you don't want to use 5200 on anything you plan on taking apart anytime soon! It can be done, but it's a real pain as that stuff is super tough and marketed as a "permanent" sealer. 4200 or one of the other products would be a much better choice, IMHO. If the temporary tubes are a tight fit, the tape may be the best solution. (You'll want to make sure you have a clean surface for the 5200 to adhere to for the final application!)

When I Seacasted my transom, my outer skin showed where my holes were.
I simply re-drilled. Actually I never thought of blocking the holes, just make sure that copper has the exact ID of your new drain tubes.

My MFG has both drain tubes out of copper and they have been fine for the last 12-15 years. My boat is only wet when I use it though. It has worked well. It is also not the same type transom. It has no plywood inside. It was molded and has an inverted A transom structure. I embedded the tubing with tiger hair and sealed it with a very good caulking on the outside. The plugs seal well. No water ever comes in around or through them. I take my deck out completely almost every year just to inspect my internal wooden keel. The wire is under the deck. Deck is held in by two lag screws and can be lifted out in one piece.

well im glad ya'll jumped on the response i was breaking the tube open tomorrow .. i'll get some plain silicone clear to just hold the tubes in place and save the 5200 for the final set up on the drain tubes. trying to find a place to put the excess seacast.. i might have some so i might put it in the back of the boat at the bottom drain hole under the deck and tube the drain tube out a little Mark i may be calling on you for a hand it would only be like an hour then letting it set ad then repeat the next day.
anyway good advice people.
