TOPIC: Rear view camera

Rear view camera 11 years 10 months ago #77605

Just installed a rear view camera in the GMC. Any you dudes done one? A bit of a challenge, but not too bad. I know a lot of newer vehicles come with them, but that's out of my range! It sure is going to be a big help!

Pretty cool Frank, sure will make hooking up to the boat trailer or camper a lot easier! Where did you pick up that unit?

Amazon. It's an inexpensive Pyle kit (80 bucks), had everything ya need, but instructions! I was determined to figure it out and did. I also figured out a way to get the video cable from the camera to the monitor without drilling a hole in the cab. Right now it's on all the time, but that will be fixed soon. Actually, the idea is to just have it on when you're in reverse, but I want it on whenever I want it on, even going forward. I do need to clean some wiring up, but that's no biggie either. Between my boat, travel trailer and utility trailer, it will save a lot of hopping out of the truck to see where I am! Plus it will allow me to keep an eye on what I'm towing.

I got a direct wire one because they say the wireless ones are prone to interference. Here's a link to the one I got: www.amazon.com/Pyle-PLCM7700-Universal-Rearview-Distance/dp/B005P5UMY4/ref=sr_1_28?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1368730393&sr=1-28&keywords=rear+view+camera

I bought a "Swift Hitch" $180 from JC Whitney. Handy little sucker!
Mag mount the cam where ya want, has night vision too, the screen shows reverse image, or click power button twice for real image. Lots of uses. 4 hours on battery run, hand held or Velcro the dash. Now I can alone hitch up any the trailers spot on first try. Couldn't live without it now! I've had no problem interference. Link..

I don't know I've been using mirrors so long I'd probably hit something. I always said if you can't back up you shouldn't be driving. My wife can't back up to far LOL I used to drive a snow plow part-time. When it got icy you had to back everywhere and drop ashes and salt. Miles at times.

i'm with you robert. i've been driving large trucks for thirty years and the closest i have come to backing into anything, other than a loading dock,is when some dumba$$ drives behind me,from the blindside, while i am backing. and i agree too on the"if you can't back it,park it". maybe that is why i find launch ramps so amusing.

One reason I go before daylight is so I don't have to watch the jack-knife shows at the boat launch.

I'll have a back-up contest with any of ya, any day. Wonderful you guys can back up with mirrors, duh. I don't have problems backing into a ramp, or down my steep narrow curving driveway, that is NOT what the back up camera if for. It's for backing up to a hitch. For some darn reason, my mirrors just do not show my ball mount. I bet you guys back right up and hook on the 1st time every time? If ya do, you're better men than me.

i put one on the blazer to hitch the boat with and the safe trailer
and when i got my new van i put one on the rear instead of the rear view mirror i couldn't see the back of the truck. makes hitching alot easier when your by yourself. the one on the blazer is aimed right at the receiver ball . it was trial and error before. a good addition for any boat guy or trailer guy.

Frank, what the young bucks here don't know is OLD age and bones YET!

Simple turning the head back hurts!. And like me, in and out the van to hook, is work!

Not anymore..(and drove a 5000 gallon tanker "Potable" (drinking water) to bush Fire bases after I broke my wrist, and off the the Gun Truck in convoys. Wrist in cast, M-16 other....

Yep on trucks and mirrors, but thats backing up a LONG trailer too! And slamming a 5th wheel to hook? "Even a caveman could do it"

Re:Rear view camera 11 years 10 months ago #77642

Thanks guys. Basically I posted this thinking it may be something others might want (or need) to consider. A lot of new vehicles have these incorporated right in their dash radio/info center screen. It's a safety thing more than a finding the hitch thing.

I have too many trailers to be poppin in and out of my truck to see how many inches I'm away from a trailer hitch. I can't lift and move either my boat or travel trailer tongue anymore, and that's where this camera comes in handy. After three shoulder surgeries, back surgery, not to mention both knees, anything I can do to make life easier (that I can afford) is what I do. It's why I spent big bucks installing hydraulic steering on a 50 year old boat. Folks made fun of me for that too. So it goes. Not everybody is perfect, and certainly not me!

Thanks Ron, you are a good fellow as well. As to Gibby, I can only assume he has not dropped off the end of the earth, but so it seems. I still can't get over him getting rid of those boats!

I know what your camera is for. I just don't need one. All I got to do is get it in the area. My trailer is very well balanced and tongue light. I just pick her up and drop it on. I too am arthritis's poster boy. I'm just old school.

Flat level ground, and a balanced boat is easy to hook. But in my case, I park on a slope, and need to chock the wheels. Thats where my camera works fine, as ya can't move the hitch but a inch sideways to hit the ball. Every trailer and tow ride are different for many us, so "one size don't fit all"!

Re:Rear view camera 11 years 10 months ago #77670

First of all, having a balanced and tongue light trailer only works for a very light set-up, as you need 8-12% tongue weight for highway driving, which I do a lot. Otherwise it's sway-baby-sway! My botat trailer tongue seems to be about 100#s, and my trailer tows 65 mph like a dream. You don't even know it's back there. Has nothing to do with old school or new school, your school or mine, it's just common sense. My travel trailer tongue is even heavier. So anyways, my post was for people like me that have problems with backing up to a hitch for any reason, it was not to suggest everyone needs one. 15 years ago I could have picked these tongues up. No more, plus it's just not worth it.

Re:Rear view camera 11 years 10 months ago #77761

Hey frank, sorry I'm late to this, was in Baltimore all weekend for my daughters graduation, master's in Speech Pathology. Woo Hoo I get a pay raise! Well anyway I made a couple of polls with earth magnets on the bottoms. Actually cut an old 1/2" metal pipe "cheap badmitton pole" about 45" or so I think (did it a while ago), attached two earth magnets from an old hard drive and put an old tennis ball on top of each one. Stick one to the top of the receiver and one on the hitch and presto, look in the rear view mirror and line up the balls as you back up and when they're about an inch apart stop and check, should be able to crank right down on the ball and good to go. Same as the telescoping ones at Harbor Freight and saved $20 or so.

I have a backup camera on the Equinox and it really does come in handy. Thought about one for the truck. I'll have to keep this one in mind looks great!

Re:Rear view camera 11 years 10 months ago #77787

I have those magnet things Bob, they work good too. I been wanting a camera for a while. My next vehicle may have a factory one. I'm still mucking around with mine, cleaned up the wiring out back and re-positioned the camera to be right on top of my hitch. It's low end stuff, but does the trick for what I want.

Congratulations to your daughter on her masters! Very cool!

Thanks Frank. Thanks again for posting the backup camera. After using the one on our Equinox I'm really thinking I need one on the truck. ;)

No problem Bob. Used it last night to back up to the travel trailer. Took a few tries to figure out which way to turn the wheel, but once I figured it out, what a breeze!

Re:Rear view camera 11 years 10 months ago #77863

I installed rear view camera up high on the motor home about a year ago.

Now I am getting things ready to install 2 side view cameras, and another camera lower on the back that will be only a back up camera. Just a few inches above the ball hitch. It will only come on when the back up lights are on

Mine comes on in reverse, but also if I'm not in reverse, I can turn it on with the power button on the monitor.

Re:Rear view camera 11 years 10 months ago #77909

Bobs' reply: I have never thought of that. Good idea, add a forward member to the ball on the hitch to tell when it is lined up front to back. When the forward rod hits the ball on the ball, you would know we are lined up front to back. Just adding another dimension to a system.

Re:Rear view camera 11 years 10 months ago #77910

On my RV those balls on the rods...well the rods would have to be 6 to 7 foot tall and then they are 33 feet from me.

Using the rear view camera would not work for I wanted it high enough to see over the cargo trailer...there forth it is too high to see the ball hitch and any of those balls on rods :)

On my Ranger and a 13 foot boat..28" tall would be perfect. Just cutting down on the distance I'd have to move the trailer by hand....I'm getting older too.
