Randy: I to am repainting a 1958 35 HP Evinrude cowling. It will be installed on a 1969 Evinrude 40 HP. I can confirm the the cowling was painted after assembly. Got the paint from North York Marine. The highlight paint color on the side of the cowling looked to be black. After having removed the chrome it turns out it was a very dark blue. I had already ordered the paint so I decided to paint it black instead of the original blue. Have one more color to add so will do that today and reassemble next week. This cowling has three colors, white, gray and dark blue making a minimum of a three day painting project.
