The brackets are another story- They are Taylor 1623. Not made any more, and getting hard to find! I bought up a small stash of them, but don't have a lot left. I've got a set of them on E-Bay at the moment. Most suppliers seem to be out of them. I wish I'd have ordered more when I had the chance!

to which Deanlofall replied:

Taylor also has a "hidden" hold down, (not near as cool as what Andrew is using) I am not sure if they are still in production, but readily available... they attach on the aft side of the windshield, so you only see the screw heads from the deck of the boat. I've used these on several windshields:

Thanks.... At first it was a daunting project, but it was not really that tough. The most intimidating part is cutting into that piece of plexi for the first time- It's pretty pricey stuff :)

I think it looks GREAT-

But then again I'm probably a little bit biased :)

Nice job Andrew. Looks great. Do you know where to find the stock wing tip brackets that you have on the side of your windshield? One of mine fell off.

Do you not need to "Un-anneal?" the aluminum to restrengthen it? Or is there even a such thing? BTW real nice job!

This story was truly an inspiration. I went to a fellow that builds winddhields for classic boats discretion does not allow me to mention names but it begins with U and it's in Davie Fl. I took my boat to him and showed him what I needed. He told me to build a pattern and out line the base of the windshield and bring it back, It would take about a month and cost over $400.00 I thought if I am going to do all the work why have him do the easy part? Then I saw your post. So I bought a peice of 3/16 Lexan heated it over a large metal tube bent it to shape. I wanted something to hold my top down so instead of channel I used awing holder. It makes a nice finish on the out side and I can slip my canvas top in the rope lock. I used the same Taylor made base gasket but I fashioned my hold downs out of SS flat rope hooks. I'll send pic when I am finished.

That came out really nice! In my case, I would be using the original upper and lower frames. What would you suggest using to take up the extra space left by the thinner material?

Thanks,
Mark

I believe Andrew cut some thin strips of the same material to lay in the groove beside (on the inside) the windshield to take up the "slack". (I know it was in his original thread, not sure if that made it into the article or not. My memory isn't what it once was.) ;)

It made it:

I slipped the strips in on the back of the windshield-

I found that if you push them towards the bends in the corner, they'll slide right in place, and kind of 'pinch' the windshield into place. If it's done right, there won't be a gap on the outside-

I have an "old boat" that was built in my home town around 1958. Beleive it or not, the windshield is without a scratch, but I could use the vinyl weather stip at the bottom. THANKS FOR THE SOURCE!!!

I have a Bell Boy Bonanza with a 6' beam. Windshield looks just like yours (according to ads and pictures I have),
I'm assuming each windshield is a different size correct? My restoration project has no windshield to template from. Ideas?
Thanks!

Re:Making a New Plexiglass Windshield 11 years 4 months ago #81617

Great job - looks beautiful.
Is this an old Glastron?
I have a 1960 Glastron fireflite (my dad bought it new!), and the bow light is the same as in your photos. My bow light is broken - both lenses gone, and the lower metal part is broken. The lenses have to have a curve to them. I am thinking of starting with some clear acrylic and heating it to bend and then add some thinner colored "gels" for the red and green.
Any ideas on where to get that same bow light? Was it an exclusively Glastron part or was it more widely used? Ours does have the little mast for a banner. Some of your earlier photos do not have it, and the final one does. - ?
Thanks for any input,
Rolf

Great instructions. I need to make one for my '60 Starcraft. How did it hold up?
Thanks

Here's my windshield I just got done for my '60 Starcraft Jupiter. It took me about 2 days. Just went slow. I used a grinder with flap disc to remove extra material on the corners. I still need to paint the bow so will leave the protective plastic on till it's time to go out on the water. Thanks to Andrew for his great instructions.

I'm trying to get this same rubber base gasket to set on my Starcraft Bahama windshield, but does not like to stay on. Andrew, did you use silicone in the groove of the gasket, and if so, how did you get it to stay until cured? Every time I try, it's pulling off at the curves and right behind where I just fit groove onto windshield. Any suggestions appreciated.
