TOPIC: Outboard Motor Stand Plans

Outboard Motor Stand Plans 11 years 10 months ago #70763

I have rigged up a sawhorse to hold my small 4hp Mercury but don't trust the basic design to hold a 60hp Mercury. Does anyone have pictures of what they use? I'd like to get the outboard off the floor of my garage and would prefer something I can make with wheels. I have a 900lb max weight hand truck I was going to modify, wondering if anyone's tried that as well?

BillM2,

I've made NUMEROUS OB motor stands from "invalid walkers" (bought for 1.oo-5.oo from thrift shops. ) by simply drilling four 3/8" holes & attaching a 2x10 board to hang the OB on, with bolts/washers/wingnuts.
(heavy-duty walkers are DESIGNED to hold up 500# safely & they will actually hold up about 600#.)

I have used one of my "field expediant" OB stands to hold up a 1965 model, long-foot, V-4 Evinrude.
(That's the OB that i described as "weighing more than the average Buick" on another thread.),
I once had a PAIR of 25HP "short-foot" Johnsons on one for months
and
I had a 40HP Gale Sovereign on one for over 2 years, with nary a problem.
(i've never weigned a "long-foot" Gale but they are NOT lightweights.)

yours, satx

I've made a couple with 4x4s for the uprights, 2x4s for the supports and 2x6 or multiple 2x4s to hang the motor on. Most of it was scrap, left over or scrounged. It supports a 50hp Johnson just fine.

Here's a set of plans that was passed around several years ago Bill, I've seen several built with minor variations;
I did add some boards across the bottom in the front on mine, to set the battery and gas tank on when test running.

Thanks for the pictures and plan! Would both designs hold a 60hp engine? I'm not certain how much it weighs, but it takes two guys to move it.

I bought a $50 (free shipping) auto engine stand from Jegs online and bolted a 2x12 to where the engine block mounts with 3/8" carriage bolts... really easy. I roll my inline 6 mercs (250 lbs) and my Etec 50 (320 lbs) all around the garage on it.

Seems like the weight of the power head would make the engine stand unstable. Is that not the case?

to ALL,

IF you need a rolling stand for a HEAVY OB, get a junked "grocery cart" & quickly modify it by removing the basket & adding a couple of pieces of 3" angle-iron or 4x4, a scrap of 2x10 & bolts/nuts/washers.
(Our local HEB grocery store has recently "trashed" a LOT of their carts & replaced them with new carts.- the old ones were "parked out by the street" with a sign that said, "FREE".)

One of the things I like about mine is that the large wheels make it easier to use on uneven surfaces. My new asphalt driveway shown in the picture is the only even terrain I have.
