TOPIC: Info on Possible Texas coast meet

Info on Possible Texas coast meet 13 years 7 months ago #49624

Recently we had a thread about having a meet on the Texas coast at Rockport.

I went this morning and met with the officials of the little park I mentioned.

There is no problem having it. No cost unless we want to rent a pavalian, and they are pretty much booked up into next summer.

However, we still have two options. It's first come, first serve normally, with one exception. They suggest I show up at 5:30 am when they open, rope off the area we want, include some tables and shore area and it's ours. We can erect tents and shades as we see fit. No cost.

If we want to insure we get that area, I can apply to the park for a permit, which would go to the city council for approval, and cost $50. The likely hood of someone getting a prime spot by either beating me at 5:30 am, or applying for the permit is so slim I'm not concerned.

If you are pulling a boat there is no cost. If you have no boat, cost is $4.00 a day per vehicle, or $10 for a yearly permit.

No dogs allowed.

No glass containers.

Alcohol is allowed, although I doubt many of us care.

There are really two questions.

1. Will enough people be interested to make it worth the trouble of scheduling and me reserving our spot,

2. Will enough of us be willing to put our boats in the salt water to make it worth it. I wouldn't put my Alumacraft in, but I would my fiberglass boats.

If, say, 4 or more want to do it, I'll get the spot. I can get hotel info and so on. Hotels and motels are around $45 and up. Price doesn't necessarily equal quality here, as some real dumps are expensive due to popularity to fishermen. If yo have one in mind let me know and I can check if I'm not familiar with it.

In this park, the boat ramp is right there next to where we'd set up, you can pull your boat up on the sandy beach or tie to a cement bulkhead. The water has an island about 1/4 mile long, you circle it at any speed, in a one way circle.

I guess if the first 2 questions are answered favorably the next question would be when. March can be great or cold and windy, fronts are still coming through, so it's a guess. April is usually nice, with rain being possible.

Oh, and the offer of a sail in the bay on our sailboat is still there.

Hey guys

Just 32 miles east of Austin on HWY 71 is a great fresh water lake that the water level only drops or rise 1 foot. It is a cooling pond for a power plant so it warms up faster then the coastal waters and also does not get as cool. It has water front AC/heated mini cabins (sleeps 5) that go for $45 a night. One can rent the Cover Pavilion (open air) for $45 a day or the AC/Heated hall for $150 a day

There are 30 amp RV hook ups, camping area (tent) beside the mini cabins. Check out Lake Bastrop South Shore Park

This would be s few hrs closer to most then the coast

I would go for that, coast too far and don't want to run in salt water. Cabins are another plus. Joe

It's up to you all, if someone wants to set it up inland, I'll be there.

If a bunch want to have one at the coast, I'll do what I can. It'll be easier for me if it's inland and someone else does it!

I host an AOMCI meet at my house in Missouri at the end of June each year, it's fun but does involve some time and effort. If my lake was bigger I'd combine it with Fiberglassics, but there is only so much you can do with 2 acres.

to ALL,

i've been to that south shore park & it's A-OK with me. - if you like i will check on getting the cabins "blocked" at Longhorn resort, which is right on the water.

could folks give me an idea how many folks would come to an April get-together? and WHICH April weekend that we want?

count "duckie" & i IN with our "new to us" runabout.

yours, satx

You can count me in, probably with 2 boats.

If I don't bring my wife's 18' Georgian Bay Giesler (A Canadian wood cedar strip) she will be far less excited.

Which weekend doesn't matter to us.

We'll most likely stay in our pickup camper.

Just a FYI
AMOIC Texas has their spring meet at Lake LBJ April 13-15, 2012.

LBJ is near a 2 hrs drive west northwest from Bastrop and they have it at the longhorn resort in Kingsland

One may not want to overlap them as some will not show to one or the other, and many may want to go to FiberGlassics one weekend and stay and go to the AOMCI meet or vice versa

BTW all AMOIC Texas meets are open to anyone that wants to come

TallTexan,

how about the weekend BEFORE for ours - then we could ask the AOMCI folk to our little get-together.

Sounds good to me...maybe be a good reason for many members of both clubs that live north of 290 :) to come down south :cheer:

The AOMCI meet in Kingsland in April or on May 19th the Austin Vintage & Antique Boat Club is having an open event at the South
Shore park on Lake Bastrop that someone mentioned. Both are freshwater events and open to anyone. Our Power Cat owners group
have been talking about doing a Texas meet of somekind and I have
suggested using either one of these events to participate in.
Its actually alot more fun joining in on another event than
trying to plan one of your own. Unless organizing events is
"your thing" it can be a bit of a hassle. Both of these are small
groups that are trying to attract more particapants so they
wellcome newcomers. I will keep watch on this thread and if ya'll
pick a date I will try to get our PC owners to participate.
Salt or Fresh either is fine by me..
