My new 6.5 gas tank from Gander Mountain is having issues. The motor sucks more fuel than the cap can allow air to escape. It starts surging the rpm's so I crack the cap and it instantl suck air into the tank. I have the vent on the cap screwed all the way out but it does not work. Any ideas for an alternative vent? Crank case vent on the tank maybe?

If you are really sucking that much fuel you have one of two things

Motor is spitting the fuel overboard.

Or most likely you have a defect vent on your cap

I'm with TallTexan here. I've seen big block V-8's use the same tanks for demo-derby work. Mine have done that service.

Try the cap from the other tank on your new one. I run a '63 Merc 85 hp and I don't have a problem, and she loves the fuel. I run with 2 12 gallon tanks that look like they are the same brand as yours. Good luck.

You said the cap was all the way out? Does that mean removed, or just to where it stops turning?
If where it stops turning, then it is likely blocking air again. Open 1-1.5 turns should be enough.

Interesting. I will try just 1.5 turns on the vent. Topping it out could block it again. Maybe i'll try blowing through it. Thanks!!

which engine do you have? My merc 400 does it too. The stock merc tank works fine.

Another solution would be forget the portable tanks, install a permanent one and vent it. Just per chance I have two tanks for sale. One is listed in the glassifieds and the other is a 12 gallon plastic.
