I was thinking about that also, Hobby King out of Chinna sells some rather Large RC motors of the brushless type that I bet would make for a short but decent speed run. Set up as a 2 or 4 motor unit to replace the engine from the outboard.

.. Probably still too small..

I saw somewhere a 'conversion' where someone put the works of a bigger trolling motor on the bottom of an old Evinrude v-4... Removed the powerhead and mounted the motor controls up there, and had a bank of batteries... It wasn't fast, but if I recall he could 'cruise' the lake all day at about 6-8 kts. It was rigged on an old 14 or 15 foot runabout. Really neat rig for a lake that didn't allow gas!

The only problem he had was with people who would come up to him at the ramp and tell him that he couldn't use that boat in this lake- No gas allowed!!

I remember that boat. It seems that the powerhead was toast and he had a hp restriction at his local lake. I thought it was cooler than heck. I thought why not put the electric in where the original gas motor was and utilize the FNR in the gearcase.
I hope someone reposts a pic here of that set up.

Ive been doing some research on some EV sites... Looks like to duplicate the 70hp powerhead, Ill need about 20-25hp. Batteries is more of an issue. What my goal would be is similar to the above example... Cruising around on electric only lakes. There are several lakes around here that are perfect but, no gas motors.

I pulled the powerhead off and have been pricing back and forth between rebuild and EV power... The problem I have ran into, I cant find a company that wants to help me out. So far, everyone I have contacted says they dont want to lend any advice/motor selection because of the duty cycle needed for a boat. Looking on my own did find some possibilities but, 2 problems. The motors are $2000 and they need at least 96v's. Might not be feasable to build a "large" electric outboard at this point.

Would you be forced to use gel type batteries? Trojan batteries have some huge amp hour ratings and are strong. The ev guys like the nicads but you need to be really serious ($$$$) about the project. My thoughts were to have solar panels on my pontoon boat. I never thought about converting an out board. Good ideas, Thanks, Dave

You might want to give ELCO a call. Believe it or not, they are still in business, just a little south of Albany, NY in Athens. Specialists in electric propulsion. They may have some thoughts for you.

Or, you can wait and see what our laboratory is working on for the next generation submarine. Are you afraid of radiation?

Seems like an electric golf cart setup would work well. I have a '77 club car electric that i had rewound. It is a two speed.(2 coils) one for speed and one for torque. It is36 volt so 6 deep cycle batteries from sams club. The cart has a ton of power. You wouldnt believe the hills climb. I can go 23 or so with 22" tires. I think the duty of a golf cart .otor would hold up too. We drive for 8 miles with this thing without stopping. Just my 2¢. Maybe contact the guys at emp inc. For advice. They are in Fort Wayne.
