Yanked the 18DC out of the snow and put it back in the garage. Pulled the RideGuide steering system and figured out why it was so stiff. NOT a bad cable, but just an oxide build up in the steering tumbler. A little emory paper and grease and it works great. Started filling dash and transom holes. Motors under way too. To do list getting shorter.

Crosby, ran into the same thing on my Cutter with the Rideguide. I (being a total rookie at the time) was ready to order the new cable. Then I started removing the helm and discovered the ancient grease had solidified, and allowed the oxidation to form "welding" the shaft into the hub. I ended up having to drive it out with a hammer and a large wood dowel used as a drift.
It's temporarily re-assembled now with the old bushings, but the "thrust washer" part of the plastic bushings is very brittle and breaking off in little pieces. Going to have to replace those when I pull it back apart for rebuild, did you replace or reuse yours? Looking forward to watching as you bring that Powercat back to life, looks like you've already got a good start on it. PS - I apologize for the "bad karma" comment between you and Ron, didn't know you were the two guys down the street having a BB gun fight for fun.  |

Yup, well down the path on this one. Already been split in two, new transom in, top back on and transom cap done, exterior hull painted with epoxy. Mostly finishing work left. You can see the complete rebuild over on Danny Ledger's Power Cat site.
Ron and I poke fun at each other. He's a good guy. Ugly boat though.   |

Lotso work on the 18DC today. Close to painting the topside. To that point, I HATE the bright yellow of Brightsides on the Powercat, but LOVE it on the Glen-L Missile. Two very different boats. Went to Lowe's and bought a 2.5 quart paint pail. Poured in a quart of Brightsides white, then started pouting in Brightsides yellow. 2 parts white to 1 part yellow gives you a nice butter yellow instead of School Bus yellow. I like it!

That 2-1 formula definitely tones down the yellow, I like it! My index finger twitches sometimes on my mouse hand, usually means I've had too much coffee.

Spread a little primer on the glass repairs. Getting darn close to painting. A few little fixes of pin holes to do, but overall in great shape.

This is Interlux Brightside applied with a 3" Wooster foam brush using the technique I described in the "Paint it Black" article posted on the site. Looks so sweet, and I am glad I custom mixed the Brightsides to tone down the yellow. Should get a second coat on today. Takes about 2 hours to lay down a coat. Hundreds and hundreds of hours to get ready to paint. I'm thrilled.

There's only one way to sand an 18DC...one groove at a time. A file wrapped in 220 does the trick. Deck is sanded after two coats. Port fin wet sanded. Stbd side and fin, the total rebuild side, I heavily sanded tonight. Splash well is good. Almost ready for motors. Should be ready for another couple of finish coats soon. Motors nearly done. RideGuide steering and conversion to OMC figured out. Making great progress. Should see water soon.

Pretty bad. I am negotiating to get them polished to see if the haze and scratches can be removed. Fall back is to have new ones made. There's a place across the Hudson that will do it. I'm sure they as soon make 4 rather than 2. Not certain what I'm doing with the top windshield but suspect (highly) I won't use the old tall one, but rather will keep it low and more rakish in it's look....and so it will fit in the garage. Also going to be ordering new windshield gasket and need to have a die made. If you need gasket, would love to split the cost of the die with someone.

Coat #3 on, and I'm calling it done, except for one more sanding of the dash. Great day of work on boats. Next weekend headed to the St. Lawrence. Added a couple more photos of work in progress before pulling the tape.

Thanks to Gary Larson of Niantic, CT who gifted these Power Cat logos to me. Stopped after church and picked up the mounting bolts for them. They look great. Lots more to do, but making progress every day.

Nice work, I just read this whole link plus viewed all those pics that frank posted the link to. That boat is so cool looking and I read that "paint it black" article in the past a bunch of times.
I really want to see pics of it on the water. My eyes have just opened up to these old classic cuddy cabins this past year. That power cat is one that I would love to own. I bet that will be one smooth ride, Mike |

Another coat of Interlux VC Performance Epoxy on the sides and three on the transom. Maybe one more on the transom since it's all mixed. Am about 24 hours away from being ready for motors.

That's the one. It's Dick Davis' old boat, but he says it needs transom and cores. Cores are easy, flat and plywood. Transom, the top has to come off like mine. That said, I know of only 5 or 6 that made it for 50 years.

More work today. After church, sanded the transom and gave it a final coat. Installed a 1/2" chromed lifting ring on the bow. This actually goes through the deck and bolts to a very heavy duty glass tab that in turn is glass to the hull. Sort of helps hold the top to the bottom, but is the main tie off for the bow. Also installed chrome transom rings. Then put 1/4" bolts through the stbd side and pulled the top to the bottom and got out the drill and rivet gun. Time to order T-bolts and measure the rubrail I have to see if will make it with the original.

I have enough of the original rub rail to replace it. I have three 12' sections and the bow wrap around. The bow piece is pretty scratched up, but I have no options. Started wet sanding it tonight and got all the old T-bolts removed. It'll be fine. That's why it's called patina.

Ouch.....!!! Found what I need at Rockler.....$1.09 per T-bolt...$65 for 50 bolts with shipping; figure 1 every foot or so. YYEEOOUUCCHH!! Course Rockler has never been cheap, but they have what you need.

Thanks Chinewalker for working on this. All back together. Tomorrow I'll do a little painting. This one is ready to start. #2 is in the basement and is also all put together and ready to start. Just need to carry it up. And, thanks again Chinewalker for steering components. Took everything apart and sorted it all out. And thanks Frank for the vice! 50 year old dissimilar metals don't like to come apart. Making good progress.

I painted this pair of bad boys this afternoon. As soon as my daughter and her boyfriend get back from shopping I'll be setting this pair of motors on the back of the Power Cat. Been a L-O-N-G road to get here, and it's an exciting day. Heading to Frank's Place now to thread a 4' steel rod to connect the two motors. Center to center the front of the motors are 50" apart!

Haven't tightened them down yet. A little more to do on the connecting rod between them. Once I have them pointed dead ahead and the connecting rod on I'll tighten them down. 22 months of work on this beast so far to get to this day I've been dreaming about since the Raceboat Regatta in 2008 when I dragged it home.
