Just ran through Illinois and Indiana through Chicago and Indianapolis and back to snow country in Northern, Wisconsin. 1,200 miles. Saw 4.69 and 4.99 for 93 octane non- ethanol premium. My wife said she saw over 5 in Chicago while I kept my eyes on the road. Maybe the boat will use the trolling motor and paddle part of the time. Good thing it looks fast sitting at the dock.

I paid $4.659 at the Poulsbo Cenex for non-alcohol Regular yesterday.

The Bear Creek Grocery Store out on the Old Belfair Highway had been $5.29 for non-alcohol Premium (which my '04 Mach 1 likes), but my buddy Jim said they had gone up recently. I haven't been out there for a few months.

Guess I'll find out the next time I'm out that way and stop for a fill-up. Meanwhile the last tank in the Mach I was cheap Cenex Regular (last fall) with a couple bottles of octane booster.

Am sure glad I'm not commuting anymore, but it's still very painful to pay at the pump, when just about every day recently has been setting an "all-time-high" record. "LETS GO BRANDON" I know you know what that means now!!!

Pete, that's about $75/hr running full throttle on Lake Crescent!

I think back to the "good old days" with my Sidewinder-SS and Merc 1350, didn't think nuttin' of burning-up 12 gallons in a day of boating.

First, do no harm!
It's a lot easier to buy a boat than sell a boat.(Stole this from a member!)
All that work and hardware store mailbox letters for the hull? Tsk tsk..

Ones of the best ways to burn fuel - full throttle! The old adage "Smiles per mile" is certainly relevant these days ;) . Pete

It is just under $5 here on the Mississippi in Wisconsin. I have been thinking how much it is going to hurt to fill the 2 12 gallon tanks in my Thompson. I think I will be listening to more Otis Redding this than normal!!

Otis Redding’s recording of The Dock of the Bay was a classic from day one and is on my cruising playlist.

Great urban vibe. Enjoy!

Still not going to stop the dream of putting twins on the rig… I figure the worst means I still go twice as fast… even if it turns out to be half the time. Ok - not actually twice as fast, but everyone gets it.

My only boat now is an old 12' Cadillac with oars, no trailer. I do have an extra paddle if someone wants to get out on the water this year. Price for regular is $3.99.9 in the frozen tundra area. Premium is $4.89.9. Those are the high numbers. If you shop around there are some BP stations that are going $3.84.9.

I grew up around boatyards along the Chesapeake, not marinas...the places where everyone worked on their own boat, all the boats were wooden and the air was filled with the sound of caulking hammers in the Spring. Boats had that certain smell of gas, wood, mildew and exhaust fumes...perfect. It's bad enough that I have to put up with pontoon "boats" and jet skis. I'm thankful that I won't live to see a world full of plastic boats powered by solar panels, batteries or propane gas tanks.

I keep linseed oil and varnish on my shelves for occasional use. Smells like a good cologne to me… also love the smell of fresh cut mahogany and Spruce… sure there are other good smelling woods. I remember Dad saying good thing you used linseed oil and lots of coats of varnish because my deadline to finish and take the boat on vacation was so tight that he was sure it wasn’t fully cured… I think I could have still press a fingernail in it… smelled great… and it did float and finally cure lol. If I live long enough, I would love to build a wooden boat with the grandkids.

Jan,

That is a great old boatyard shot of the boats in progress. Wonder if any are still out there. Although the workplace looks like an accident waiting to happen. Also curious if they bothered to count lost time days back then.

Chicago Boat Building Company, circa: a long long time ago.

Hey Cal & Dr Go!

This place had to stink good down there on the gritty north branch of the Chicago River.

I recall in the 1980’s there were houseboats moored in the same section at Irving Park Rd and I had regular customer whose industrial property backed up to river there. I’d always get there early, park by the water line, sip coffee and watch the sun rise. Best part was the smell of them folks down on the houseboats frying up the bacon for breakfast.

And I’d bet this guy complained about price of his kerosene.

Had some fun putting together a story on this lost boat yard a few years back.

Thanks,
Terry

Thanks for sharing Terry. Makes ya wish you could go back sometime.
Back in the '50s I used to swim at the old stone quarry in Door County and we would constantly be picking up wooden wedges that were used in the shipyards to hold boats in dry dock. When they would launch/relaunch then they would tip the boat into the water and all the wedges and cribbing would just float away. Out of site..... also would find old fishing net floats along the shore. The downside was stepping into the excess grease that floated to shore from freighter prop shaft stuffing boxes.

This is "Enchantress" a 1970 Ventnor 31' sedan that I restored in 1984...my first boat restoration. The photo was taken at Skipjack Cove, one of the last true boatyards along the Maryland Eastern Shore. All the work was done right where you see the boat sitting. Guys would loan tools, donate paint, varnish and caulk, give advice, lend a helping hand...and everyone brought beer. At the end of the day, we'd sit around and shoot the shit, talk boats, lie about women and drink beer. That's just the way things were and at the time, I never really appreciated it. I feel sorry for those who never experienced a real boatyard.

That’s a big one!

New Grand Craft plant in Genoa City WI

The Canal Street boat yard on the Chicago River is so far still there as development creeps ever closer.

Very cool pictures of Canal St boat yard. Also didn't know the shop in Genoa City existed.

Where do you put your boat in when you cruise the Chicago river?

Hello Larspar,

Grand Craft relocated from Michigan to Southern Wisconsin last year. They are right up the road from where I get my non-ethanol gas and I plan to pay them a visit and look around soon.

www.lakegenevanews.net/news/local/boat-manufacturing-company-moving-headquarters-to-genoa-city/article_18ef9a3e-27ce-5626-bd52-adf786f5895a.html

The Daley launch ramp is on the south branch at Western & 31st just a few miles downriver from Canal Street.

Not to be confused with the more adventurous course launching at 31st Street Harbor on Lake Michigan and cruising a few miles up the lakefront and locking through to the river.

Thanks Terrydi!

Looking at an aerial view, the Daley ramp appears to be perhaps a hidden gem.

Does it get busy?

Awkward question but, do you feel confident leaving your tow rig/trailer there?

The picture of you navigating the harbor and lock are great! Although Chicago doesn't really have the protected harbor that Milwaukee does. I suppose it can get exciting if the winds pick up.

The Daley Launch ramp is under CPD remote surveillance, and they patrol there too.
I’ve launched and retrieved at least a half dozen times without issue. I get down there early and pull-out late afternoon and had no problems.

We are organizing a Chicago River event for the fall so get the Larspar ready.

Another option is to lift in at Canal Street.

It’s a scenic ride out on Chicago’s waterfront and cruising through its narrow river canyon is an incredible experience. Head up the North branch and take ride around Goose Island.

Then motor up to Metro Brewing for refreshments. Food trucks in the lot or if you have time order a pizza for delivery.

And yeah, I should check out Milwaukee Harbor and the river too. Our Glacier Lakes group organizes Milwaukee River cruises and need to get on board.

We are also working to organize a workshop at Grand Craft yet this spring. You are welcome to join us.

Thanks for the great information!

I would truly enjoy the Chicago scenic cruise. Although Milwaukee has a nice harbor, the Milwaukee River and skyline can't hold a candle to Chicago. I've taken the architectural cruise a couple times. Spectacular!! Additionally, Chicago offers so many miles of waterway to explore.

Not sure I'll make this year's event...time will tell.

Heading down stairs to get some more boat work done now.

I dont think topic matters any more on this thread, LOL. This is what I like about this forum, I dont see a bunch of forum police crying about bringing up an old thread, or yelling at someone to start their own thread. This place seems to be like a bunch of old friends having any discussion that sometimes wanders off topic, and its ok.

Hello eperot,
thanks for the interest. I'm subscribed to your project thread and enjoy seeing the components you continue find for your Seafair.
My original post in this forum was #145407. Some of my pictures are no longer present, which I don't understand.
I do have an active thread going in the 70's Disco-Fiber forum.

I'll figure out how to create a gallery for pictures of the boat when I purchased it.
