TOPIC: Caveat Emptor....at least when it comes to parts

Caveat Emptor....at least when it comes to parts 4 years 10 months ago #141835

The Mercruiser raw water pump on my Resorter seems to have seen one too many rebuilds so I sourced a new Jabsco from a reputable supplier via Amazon. Pump arrives and it is new and in factory packaging, but I notice the enclosed instructions reference ITT which owned Jabsco ~10 years ago, maybe slightly less (they are now owned by Xylem). Having a healthy paranoia about critical parts, I opened the pump and saw this:

The impeller had stiffened, cracked and taken a set. The grease had hardened to the point where I had to use acetone to clean it and it still left a permanent stain on the bronze. Guessing this one had sat on the shelf for many years. Despite the hard rubber, the bearings seemed fine and I replaced the impeller and gasket w/ OEM. I'll keep an eye on it this season and deal with any issues.

Irritating, but the vendor said they are in touch w/ Jabsco and will get back to me. We will see....like I said, irritating.
