TOPIC: Manual override for 65 Merc 1000 power tilt&trim?

Manual override for 65 Merc 1000 power tilt&trim? 5 years 5 months ago #140342

I have a 1965 mercury 1000 power of tower on a 1965 slickcraft ss160 that appears to have original power tilt trim.

Is there a method to override the hydraulic circuit to allow me to lift or lower the outboard without giving power to the hydraulic pump?

I do see an Allen wrench set screw (with white paint marks) on the top of each cylinder but with them both almost fully unthreaded it does not seem to let me overcome the hydraulic cylinder current state (full down) when I try to lift the outboard.

The image is of the starboard side of the hydraulic unit (power trim and tilt) and port side is a mirror image.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Gus

The Merc experts should be able to help you. If I recall correctly, the power trim type you show was not factory available until the 110 Merc of 1966. Cool someone put it on your 1965 1000. Would be nice to have it on mine. www.fiberglassics.com/library/index.php?title=File:Mercurya66001.jpg

On the pump inside the boat, is there a large thumbscrew on the front? If there is, that is your override. It should be marked which way to turn it to be able to lift the motor. If it is like mine, it pulls up hard because the fluid has to be forced through the by-pass. If yours is not marked, let me know and I can go out and look at mine and get the instructions.

Thanks Bill,

I pulled the fuel tank out of the way and the pump does have a knob marked for ‘reverse lock operation’ so that might be it?

I reached under (from next to the boat not from inside the boat) but it didn’t budge the way I was grabbing it so I will have to attempt again once I can crawl a bit closer and use both hands.

The knob is knurled so I imagine it’s the ticket. Pic attached shows the knob on the bottom center.

Appreciate the help thus far

Gus

Success! I turned the knurled knob clockwise a few turns and that allowed me to lift the outboard up to the locked up position.... now I can start cleaning around the mount.

Thanks so much for your help.

Got that from the Doc. He was building me a motor, while I was doing the boat.

That is one of my all time favorite motors! ... a shorty with a sweet over the hub speed prop. That is one nice boat. I love the idea of mounting that trim unit on a nice thick rubber pads. I would pull a muscle in my neck if I saw that rig drive by. Doc helped me with a missing part that completed my motor. I think my dad paid just over $200 to get that trim installed on a long shaft 150 in 1974. Thanks for showing the pictures.

Its not a XS, but had the 74 XS (new then) on my 74 Switzer. Loved that boat as the MERC! But here, Doc did a 115 motor, and it was really a chocked down 135 for that HP range that year, 72, so brought back to 135 with 135 parts, and way more added. But I loved them red strip "1500 XS MERC decals that came out later (75/6?) Mine was a louverd wrap blue strip, but did the red when available. Pix my old Switzer/XS. Notice blue strip first pic, then more the Switzer. And last pic is Docs XS on the same type boat. He had 2, I bought the other boat.

Great pictures and boats. Fun, fun, fun! Glad I am not the only one with a need for speed. Looks like you and Doc are like mad scientist in the workshop and one the water. Love the mods and results.

Hey Robby,
I'm assuming the old guys are you and the Doc but who is the Margarita Girl?
I sent you emails through FG massaging. Did you receive them?

Mark,
I sent you an email also. Never used the option so not sure if I am doing it properly.

Thanks,
Terry
