TOPIC: Restore Daka-Ware (Phenolic) Knobs on Throttle

Restore Daka-Ware (Phenolic) Knobs on Throttle 5 years 5 months ago #140242

Hey everyone,

I'm in the middle of restoring the throttle on my Stingray. Does anyone know how I can restore the throttle knobs shown in the picture to their original colors? They appear to have been a dark red and a darkish green.

The material is called Daka-Ware, a very hard phenolic plastic which is very similar to bakelite. I've seen instructions on how to restore shine, but I would like to get the original color as well. If I can avoid painting it, I would like to, since it feels to me like the plastic itself was colored, not painted

The shift control is not specific to your stingray. It's a common OMC, Johnson, Evinrude control that was used many years in the '50's. I've seen and have controls with both levers having a black knob and others having a black and red knob. Usually the black is for the shift function and the red is speed control.
eBay has quite a few listed. An online search would probably find what you are looking for less trouble than trying to repair what you have.

I was trying to keep everything original. Is something as small as a knob like that not considered a big enough deal to keep original? I’m new to the whole restoration thing so I don’t know what people prioritize

A replacement option is available from McMaster-Carr, www.mcmaster.com , threaded phenolic knobs. Search on threaded knob. I think they are a nice replacement for my Evinrude Simplex control.
