TOPIC: Off shore

Off shore 8 years 2 months ago #135671

I'm curious to see how many of you guys are confident taking your Glassics into open waters.
I'm picking up an OMC Dual Deluxe. Planning to make the 50 mile trip from Ft Lauderdale to Bimini in summer. Have all the safety gear including an inflatable dinghy with a 15 Johnson. Opinions?

Check the weather forecasts and pick a really calm day. Get yourself a VHF FM radio (all the newer ones have built in distress calling, just push the button) . Follow the rule of thirds. 1/3 of your fuel to get there, 1/3 to get back and 1/3 in reserve just in case. If you plan ahead you should do alright. Oh yeah, leave a float plan with someone who will miss you and call the Coast Guard, like your wife, kids, best friend, dog, whoever.
