Exact same boat I restored last year. Year, Model, '60 Shell Lake Rocket.
Self explanatory so I'll just post pics of progress. Last registered in 1981 and sat on the edge of a cornfield for over 30 years. Covered with lichen, moss, weeds, grass, small trees.

Great work. You are a machine, Cal! I use block and tackle it my garage too. The blocks were my grandpas. I use his and my Dads tools so they are with me as I carry on the boat tradition they got me hooked on. Oh no - just saw the dreaded trailer work waiting along the wall...I know how much you like that part.

Made up some high gloss bloodwood inserts for the steering wheel and boarding steps. Also made 5 new windshield braces to match these inserts. High density exotic.
Painted inside of the hull and started color sanding. Also made up a high gloss bloodwood dash board panel. |

The bow light I purchased from Brad (Meteor). He gave me a fair price that I couldn't refuse. It was a win for both of us. Less for me to pay and with the Canadian exchange he got a good market price.
The other pieces I just used SOS pads to smooth off the pits. I plan on going to some shows/swap meets next season and maybe pick up a piece or two. There are other resources available. The window braces I hand made out of a very high density exotic wood (Bloodwood) that I laminated. I also am using the wood as highlight trim pieces for the gunwale step pads and a dashboard panel. I'll post more pictures when the adhesive sets and I can remove clamps and tape. |

I prefer to keep the dash clean and uncluttered. In the process of locating the choke/key switches on the starboard side.

Thanks Mark, I'm really getting burned out on the boat rebuilds, thinking this will finally finally finally be the last one. I've only said that a hundred times since the early '80's.
This next coming season I'm think of getting rid of all my old used parts. If Kosh next May is a go I'll be there with boxes of stuff to sell in bulk at give away prices. If the weather sucks again I'll plan on Tomahawk. The rocket is almost finished, the punch list is down to one page, some color sanding on the hull, adding the chrome bumper and the interior etc. The dreaded trailer is done, not my best work but done. |

Chuck, If I had 3m 5200 I would have used that but I was all out and wasn't going to fork over $18 for a tube.
I used PL (Pro Line) Premium construction adhesive. All weather, waterproof, exterior. The coating on the wood is the pourable epoxy. Tricky stuff to work with and takes a few days to fully cure. When I mounted the wood I clamped a 1" x 1" wood strip on the bottom of the dash to keep things lined up straight and put a thin layer of the adhesive on both the dash and back of the wood. They were both roughed up with 60 grit sandpaper to give the glue lots of bite. I then used blue painters masking tape to hold it in place for a few days and double checked to make sure they were tight to each other. |

Finally get to kick back and sit on my kiester behind a sewing machine. Starting the interior cushions and getting some use out of the bow and front seat for storage and work space.
Those pieces of cardboard on the front area are actually patterns I made of the seats for the first rocket. |

I see a lot of shine and sparkle under the shop lights...especially that awesome bow light someone sold you. What a great place for nice parts to find a home that brings them back to their glory. You are the task master... your Rocket 1 seats were really nice. Saving a pattern here and there seems quite helpful. This will be one nice Rocket!

Thanks Mark. The bow light was provided by "Meteor" from Calgary, Alberta, CA. We messaged and mailed and worked out a deal that was good for both of us. Really glad he pulled through.
The Rustoleum yellow turned out good, if you look at the second picture you can see the reflection(s) of the material on the bow. Thirteen seat parts to make so I will take a few weeks. Busy doing yard cleaning and putting plants away for winter with the freezing temps upon us now. |

Will we get to see this boat in Kosh in the spring? I do see the reflection! I forgot... do you spray or roll and tip? How many coats and what grip sanding between each and final. I keep a notes log for all of this stuff for my restoration to ponder my approach. Prior proper planning prevents poor performance I hear.

Top deck was sprayed with about 5 coats over 2 days. Three wet coats the first day. With the hardner added it sets up in about a half hour and can be sanded the next day. The hull was roll and tip with three coats. Used 800 W/D lightly on top and then went 2000. McQuires ultimate polish with the power machine for the final. The windshield needs some serious buffing yet.

Wow Cal...Wow! That really turned out nice. What a great combo and great colors to go with it all. That rig will look great behind any vehicle and especially on the lake! Lots of talent and determination right there!

Thanks Mark, still have lots of work to do on it but now things can slow down for the winter. Just wanted to get some pics by the water when the sun is still shining. Temp was in the 30's with a strong north wind blowing. You can see by the stern flag almost straight out.
Great job on your Jeep, hope it runs as good as it looks. Nice to have great help. She's a keeper.... |

Thanks Bill, coming from the premier restorer it's a real complement.
Lots of detail to do yet, finish up the seats, paint the bilge areas, make fuel and battery hold downs, wet sand the entire lower hull, polish the foggy windshield, etc. |

Thanks Brad. not really looking for any kudos. What I need now is a good way to clean up that foggy windshield. Regular polishing doesn't seem to work. Wondering if steam would be enough heat to clear it up. Any suggestions?

If it is plastic, could that 3m kit they make for cleaning the fogginess out of those headlights (like on my older Jeep)? it did do a nice job on several car headlights that I have done. I also had good luck with that Flitz. I am sure there are pros out there who have better ideas...just giving you what I have tried.

I did the Nexus 3 part system and it was really nice on the last rocket, this one sat out in the field so long I think the sun actually changed the chemistry over 30 years. I did find that using a heat gun clears it up but it's so touchy I put a small burn mark on a top area. Scratches are not the problem, just plain foggy.

Nice work on your boat! Sorry if this is an ignorant question, but, when you show the pics of the top of the boat separated from the bottom hull.... is the boat (and other glassics) designed to come apart this way, or did you cut it apart to make the work easier on the hull? If so, how did you re-attach the two and regain the original solidness of the boat?
