TOPIC: 1960's Columbian Fury 8 foot

1960's Columbian Fury 8 foot 7 years 11 months ago #129639

Hello -
I am in the process of restoring this boat I found as part of a barn clean out.
Although I have been boating all my life this is the first time restoring so I have done more reading than fixing. So, good to start small. I did not see a 1960's forum just 70/80's.
I am looking to get some advice on stringers, parts and so on and to post my project to date...just looking for the right place on this forum to show and get some help.

struggling with how to multiple pic this thing

Trying to figure out multiple pictures.
It is like a GW from what I have seen but its not. I do not know much about it. I have it in my basement at this point and replaced the transom

huh that is funny that out of no where these things start showing up, dont we have a list somewhere that gives all the boats and how many we have on this site. like a running count of all the different makes and models . would be curious. heck there might be a few that someone has got but just forgot about-em. their small enough to just be overlooked. anyway i would love to see video of one on the water.....

Sleezstak,
"Hello -
I am in the process of restoring my 8' Fury which is a lot like the GW.
The stringers were just 1/4" ply covered in glass. I was thinking of using the white fibre board (fake wood) as it would not rot. this is my first resto so any help is appreciated"

Sleezstak, i'd redo it the same way the factory did but make sure it's glassed in a lot better, make sure drainage is good, and not store it uncovered in the rain and snow.

Thanks for the info. The stringers on this thing were plywood and done in two sections. I believe due to the curve.
Any good options out there. There is a good write up on this site but I think more geared to larger boats. Just want to do it once.

Big glass or little glass,...Vintage fiberglass hulls are most definitely welcome and supported here.
Keep us all posted with questions and advances with your progress.
There are some very professional and experienced restoration guys monitoring and replying to posts here every day.

I am going to move my boat project over to the "Member Projects" forum as I think it is better spot for "historical value"
I am only saying this in case someone, someday is looking for info on a boat like this. Done right or wrong, it will be fun. Hardest part will be fitting the HEMI on it.

Bill, I've stopped several times to check out your 'Lake Racer' - Nice, a true fiberglassic. Up to talking old fiberglass boats over a pop next door, let me know. I've got a battleship hull, '59 Bellboy runabout (small tail-fins) w/a '63, 75hp Starflite V and a '60's Chrysler Lonestar 13' one design sloop. Both need work - Advice always welcome.

I was able to see this faintly on your Coast Guard plate:

I've found this on the USCG site for your Lake Racer:

There was also a reference to:
Duane L. Smith in Ames, IA
&
Smitty's Lakerunner Enterprises

Hope it helps you, Brian

I still have my 1966 Fury. As a kid I had a hurricane 10 on it for a while. Prior to that I used a 6 hp Johnson followed by an 18 evinrude.

2nd pic is this year with a 9.9 rigged with controls. Every ride takes me right back in time by 45 years

I also have a couple of 10 ft GW invaders
Another project is a 17 ft Sutphen sport pacer with a 150
