Any ideas how to tighten up the mirror on my Sea King? It is annoying as it drops down when were are under way, but much more annoying is my wife constantly wanting to readjust it. Help!

I believe those have some kind of ball joint that it hinges on. If so try drilling and tapping some threads in it for a set screw. Then you can adjust the mirror where you want it and simply tighten the set screw. Hope that helps.

This is not your mirror, but the concept may be the same ?

Depending on how loose it is, you might try injecting lock-tite into the ball socket. You could also try injecting silicone, place a bead around it, then articulate the ball to work it into the socket.

Just repaired the mirror on my 1967 IMP Oceanic. Used a heatgun to heat the mirror until the adhesive let loose. Had the mirror upside down in a vice and had a couple towels for the glass to fall onto. Once apart you can use a hammer and punch to tighten the space around the mounting ball. Contact cement back into place.

I will just add in case anyone is having a similar problem. I have a mirror that is loose too. But, it fits in a rubber grommet/fitting into the base and it is a ball joint.

I was trying to figure out how to tighten it up and one of the solutions I tried seem to work, although who knows how long for.

I took liquid electrical tape and dropped it in the hole with toothpicks and let it role around. I then let it dry overnight before I put the mirror back into it.

I was one choppy water today and it seems to have held really well. I never had to adjust the mirror once. So, it may not work long term, but it was an easy fix and it is easy enough to redo.

I'm attaching some photos of my connector type in case someone else comes upon this thread.

Well, that was interesting.

I went to get a heat gun, and no one in the store could find one. I needed a new clicker for my propane torch, so I just bought that instead. Then I got it home, and it doesn't work.
I was up until after 1am working on the boat as we are taking it up north for a long weekend, and when I finally came in to bed, my wife says, just make sure that darned mirror is fixed.

So, I used the gas stove top and heated it up while holding it with my welding gloves. The mirror came out easily. The plate that clamps down on the ball was loose, so I mushroomed the rivets over and it got quite a bit better, but not enough to be happy. So I took out my punch and tapped a few places that I figured would snug it up...wrong. Totally opposite effect. Extremely loose.

Huh.

So, after staring at it for a while, I got a strip of 500 grit sand paper and snuck it in between the ball and the plate. I had to pop one end of the plate off to do this, and then replace it and mushroom the rivet back down. Perfect. Hope it lasts...

I hope you dont mind a brief detour to the subject....

I'm looking for a vintage type chrome mirror for my boat. Automotive mirrors are too small, I need a larger marine type.

Was your mirror original from Sea King? If not, any idea who made it?

Thanks!

Mark

Yes, it is original to the boat. However, there is no maker's mark on it. Ebay?
