TOPIC: Skagit 17 INBOARD barn find

Skagit 17 INBOARD barn find 14 years 4 months ago #12241

They just keep popping up & finding their way to my boat yard.

Last weekend I picked up a 1960 Skagit Skimaster 17 Inboard. Story is that only a few were built for Lake Tahoe & then skag went out of business. Not sure if that is correct, but these inboards sure don't turn up like the outboards do. I am now the 3rd owner of this boat since it was 1st sold in 1960. I even have all the documents - cool. Previous owner put it in a barn in 1979, put the trailer on blocks, winterized the Interceptor V8 - and covered the boat. It is extremely well preserved. Though the Skagit inboards weren't the most sexy boats, this is still a real cute creampuff. The thing weighs over a ton, 750 pounds of that being the 312 Mercury Interceptor and Velvet Drive Transmission. Motor has less than 100 hours on it, I looked inside the valve cover & you could eat off the parts. No sign of coke sludge at all. The original 272 V8 was pulled in 1969 and the merc was installed after a full rebuild. This was done because the 272 was a little weak pulling 4 grown men at 6,200 ft elevation at Tahoe. Apparently the 312 solved that problem. It shouldn't take much to get her going - I'll start on it as time allows.

Enjoy!

Motor has less than 100 hours on it,

That's barely "broken in" in by our standards! Super nice find, Bruce. I know a couple of guys that will be quite envious, including myself.

Thanks guys,

I actually didn't find it, my friend Eduardo Nanca found the boat advertisd on CL a couple years ago. The pictures here are actually the ones he took of it - not me. Thanks to Eduardo, I now own the boat & can restore her.

Good lord Bruce!! Excellent find. Way to go Eduardo. No Evinrude on that one! LOL. I'm sure you will have a wonderful time with that project and a truly rare classic when completed. Should tear up Lake Shasta with that one! Mike in Oregon.

The old girl is probably begging to get back in the water!
Wonderful find.
Keep us posted on the restore.
