TOPIC: For Andgott...speckled paint on deck

Andrew,
I've finally gotten to the point of painting the inside/deck of my boat and I was wondering how you did the speckeld effect on y9our boat. You were right my old paint did have that effect and I would like to replicate it. I have a couple of ideas but would like to know how you did yours. I know there are other folks who would like to know also.

By the way, I'm going to use Interlux Pre-kote/Brightsides and add non-skid for the deck.

try zolatone...I know some folks improv the effect but they have the stuff ready to roll....

I lay down acrylic latex water based porch enamel then over coat with webbing spray. It comes in black and white. The two colors over gray base give a nice effect. Mike

Mine is similar- Except I used a white base with two 'tones' of grey-



Mine was a base coat of gloss white. I then 'tossed' the flecks from a brush onto the hull. It was thinned about 50%. Practice a bit with the brush, until you get the pattern that you're looking for. Here's my practice board, you can see the pattern better-



It looks kind of like the zolatone, but it's a LOT less expensive!

Thanks guys, great inputs. I decided to go with the Interlux Pre-Kote and Brightsides route. White of course. I really don't want to have to redo the bottom or sides again. Especially after I get the bench seat back in, screwed down and bunged. I'm also going to mix in the non-skid additive from Interlux for the deck. Yeah it's more expensive than the porch enamel but theoretically should last longer. It's still cheaper than the quotes I saw for the Zolatone. Nice stuff but Ouch.

I have some Black Enamel leftover from some cabintes I made for the garage. I think that should sit fine on top of the brightsides.
