TOPIC: 1968 MFG Chevron

1968 MFG Chevron 10 years 1 month ago #100596

acquired 1968 MFG Chevron recently. Will be doing overdue maintenance, repair and some structural restoration (floor and sub-floor, wiring and hardware). Will also recoat top and bottom.

The boat came with an Evinrude Lark II 40 h.p. Having a hard time finding a serial number and model number on it though some internet research indicates this motor as an old (1960?)workhorse.

I've found forums like these to be really indispensable while restoring a toyota landcruiser and a harley sportster in the past.

Looking forward to many visits.

Hey welcome aboard.

And hey, you stole my boat!

I have a blue 68 chevron with a 68 merc 10000. Just put a new floor in last winter.

No problem. Mine came with all the original vinyl. Roof, rear cabin, and bow cover.

If there is anything I can help with I will. Ive received a lot of guidance from this site.

The one thing I'd recommend on replacing the floor. Remove the top of the boat. I didn't, and it was a bear getting up under the bow. Somebody pointed out his book and it helped too. Since it was my first project.

man it is good to finally see another MFG in here .. looks like a good start. maybe you heard this already but take alot of pictures of everything on and around the boat, references for later and also good to look back and see how far you had gotten . especially as you start tearing off parts and pieces. make a place for just boat parts keep everything together. glad you found us.

OOOOHHH! I'd love to see what the original canvas looked like! Can I ask where your boat is located? Anywhere near new england?

I am completely replacing the floor system, by the way.

I'm in PA. Near Harrisburg.

I have the canvas off the boat. It felt to close to have it on while driving. But its in great shape. The seats you see in my posts are original too. Only one has a tear in the top from someone sitting on it. Have the original cover on it and its still usable. It was kept in a heated garage.

I can take some pics of the canvas for ya, but they won't be on the boat. Have them stored on the third floor.

Has two supporting slat that go under.

OK, don't have the motivation at the moment to unfold all the others. But here is a pic from an add I have.

Hey, did you end up getting into your transom? I finished cleaning out the entire "sub-floor" right down to the hull. As I was fine cleaning back by the transom I found a bit of rot on the aft-port side at the bottom of the transom. I gonna get into it eventually; wondered if you have already been down that road.

Sorry, I have not been watching this thread.

My transom was solid. I drilled some exploratory holes. I think the previous owner did some work to it when adding the jack plate.

Incidently I've been toying with the idea of selling mine without the motor. We have another kid on the way and this boat is a bit small. I have a powercat 18dc in the works.

Good luck with the transom.
