I looked up the part number for a 1968 85 hp john rude flywheel on marine engine and came up with 0580685. If your '67 80hp takes the same flywheel as a '68 85 hp. I ebayed a couple that might fit. hopefully anotherhttp://www.ebay.com/itm/301353738148?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Wow thanks for all the help guys. Yeah I have to agree it's starting to look pretty bad. From what I can tell it looks like the '67 flywheel was a one year only deal, gee go figure, that's about par for the course with this thing! lol

Vintagerunner yep that's the one, problem is I can't get a real good look at the keyway to make sure it isn't in the same shape mine is. I'll have to try an contact them.

Thanks guys!!!!

Re:'67 80 hp died again "Update" 9 years 2 months ago #116108

Sorry to confirm - the 67 flywheel is indeed only a 1 year deal. I think both the crank and the flywheel hub are worth lapping a few times to see what happens. The snout on the crank looks iffy - at least in the pictures. Maybe it's really more clean than it appears. But if the crank has any galling at all, even a new flywheel won't fix it alone. The snout needs to be as clean and burr free as possible. If it were mine, I'd lap it really well, then clean it of. Then paint the crank with some machinist's bluing compound. Set the flywheel on after the bluing has dried and slowly move the flywheel a quarter turn or more on the the stationary crank. Pull the wheel straight up and off the engine. Look to see how the bluing has been scraped - any high or low areas should be visible by the marks left in the bluing

Thanks Bruce. I'll try and lap it a few more times and then do the bluing to see how it comes out. yesterday and today were Resorter days. Steamed the chines in so I should be able to get back to the flywheel while the chines dry.

John, thanks yep right one but let's see what the general opinion is on the following pics before we do anything else.

So here are the after lapping and after bluing pics.

I don't think it looks that bad but I'm no expert. Thoughts anyone?

I gotta agree, damage to the keyway is not good, looks like you are only getting about 2/3 of the holding power.

Bob;

I have been following your thread from the beginning, and I must admit you have greater patience that I will ever have. I hope a replacement flywheel will be the final answer for you. I have learned much by reading this thread, for sure. So many great people on this site that are more than willing to help. Thanks for posting so many pics, it has been very interesting. Keep on trying - you are an inspiration!

Bob, Looking forward to seeing some finished pictures and water shots next season with the motor running. Almost 6 pages of problems with ups and downs. Hope this is the final wrap-up.
Now...put the cap on, test it with a hose and fog 'er for the winter. Time to relax move on and cut a few more boards for the Resorter.

Well the flywheel is back on. Used my buddies impact gun that put out 405ftlbs. Pulled the trigger until there wasn't any more movement.

Started her up and still not running right. Seemed like it was only firing on 3 cylinders. She died and didn't want to start again. The battery ran low gain so it's on a charger until tomorrow and I'll try again. More tomorrow.

Bob

Thanks again John!!!!!

Robert..........Back to basics again.
Now that you have your 'new' top cap, assuming that the points, capacitor, etc. are correct and clean, plugs are gapped properly, all plug wires are connected correctly and are tight in their mags I would recheck the timing again....just to make sure. Ya know with all your ducks in a row now and a proper non slipping key you could be off a notch on the drive belt, Just sayin'. Some of us would really like to see an end to this 5/6 page thread, especially you ;)

Re:'67 80 hp died again "Update" 9 years 1 month ago #116727

Bob,

You may get credit for one of the longest running threads on the forum!

Throw that impact gun away. They are for removing rusty lug nuts, trailer & frame bolts. NEVER assembly with them. Besides possibly stripping the crankshaft or flywheel nut, you risk cracking the flywheel hub on the taper (remember, too tight = too far onto taper = spreading the hub) or worse yet, cracking the end of the crank.

Not sure of the proper torque on yours but my '66 DU (same core engine) calls for 70-85 foot-lbs

You and me both Cal, you and me both!

Jim, Used the torque wrench the last two times and it was still coming loose. Went with the impact gun this time. Didn't have the full power anyway since I was using the hotdog tank compressor not my big one.

Checked everything over and looked correct. Point gaps looked a little off so I tweaked them. Took the battery off the charger and fired her up. Started right away but would run real well at idle, had to kick it up to keep running. Here is a video, still not sure it sounds right.

Thoughts?

Smokes about right. Me thinks you have a winner there.
Keep the faith. Here's a run of a '66 90hp 'Rude you might want to watch. World speed record 135+ in 1966.
