TOPIC: throttle linkage

throttle linkage 10 years 9 months ago #91044

Hey guys.....

Was out working on the on the johnson today and ran into a problem. I had to replace the gear that that has the arm that the throttle cable hooks to. I accidentally bumped the old one and it broke. Anyways now I am having a problem with the throttle linkage setup. The motor is a 1962 johnson 40hp...rds-24l.

When I set the throttle to slow the throttle plate seems correct and is mostly closed. But when I move the throttle to fast the throttle plate on the carb only opens about halfway. if i adjust the linkage so that the throttle opens all the way it will not go back to idle. I am stumped. Ive adjusted the linkages about everyway i can see and cant figure it out. Is there a certain procedure to do this? My manual seems very vague on the subject.

Thanks
scott

After thinking about it a little more, i figured it out. Per the manual i had shifted it into gear to set the linkage. What i didnt realize is that i accidentially shifted it into reverse instead of forward. In reverse the armature plate wont rotate to full advance. I shifted it into forward, and i now have full range of throttle.

i wish i would have thought of this before! I was scratching my head for 3 hours last night.

Good on ya for figuring it out Scott! There have been a number of times I've had to walk away from a project overnight and come back the next day to get a better thought process going. LOL Glad you got it sorted out.
