I checked the compression today using the pull starter. It seems a little low at an even 85lbs in both cylinders at least it was even. Is that about right for the big twin? On Mercs of the era and all of the cars I have ever worked on it is normally over 120.
It has spark but I want to replace the poinst and check out the coils.
How do you get to the water pump? I have been reading the manuel in the library however it does not say how to access it. I also understand that the electric shift is a little different?
On the lower unit what is the special oil? Is it still available.

I believe it's called "Type C" gear lube Hustler, and I believe some of the Johnson-Evindrude dealers still carry it.

Those are an excellent motor.--The electric shift is very good and reliable.--Just make sure no water gets into the lower unit.-Changing the waterpump is not much different from the manual shift version.
Just be careful pulling the shift wiring harness ( $$$$$ ) down !---Make sure the generator is working properly as the shift magnets ( not solenoids )need constant 12 volts to keep it in gear.

The old electric shifts do use type "c" lube and if i remember correctly its non conductive so the current don't flow to the other magnet through the fluid causing everything to lock up.
