I just bought a johnson 6 hp he did it perfectly but did not haven compression on one cylinder I bought a new head gasket want to start and really did nothing except for an huge bang in the exhaust I think. and I also bought a new cylinder head because something broke

I hope someone can help

1976 is a little too new for me but on the older ones,
If it back fires through the exhaust, it usually means the timing is to far retarded. Check your timing marks you may be out of time.

There are a few things that can cause it to back fire. Are you sure that you have the wires on the right cyl. If it is running too lean. Timing is a bit hard to mess up, unless you bent the linkage, A leaking head gasket.... wrong one, not torque right, or warped head
