I've got a '63 Gale 25hp and I'm having a real tough time with it idling, I know for a fact that it's the synchronization of the throttle and the timing. The scribe line on the armature plate is supposed to pass the pointer when the throttle just begins to open, I've got that part. But how do I time the ignition properly without that special OMC tool? I've never done a magneto ignition before and I'm rather lost. I'm down with my breaker points on my V4 80HP. I just wanna get this little one idling properly so I don't have to fool with getting it in gear without dying. Thanks!

You could check where the timing is now with a timing light.
The factory tool is a " shop time saver "
It is but a dummy flywheel.
Pull the flywheel off.----.
You lock the magplate.
Then loosely install the flywheel so that cylinder 1 timing mark lines up between the two marks on the magplate.
Carefully remove flywheel.
Set points with an ohmmeter.-Repeat for the other cylinder.
Check work with a timing light afterwards.

I know what the two marks your talking about on the mag plate are, but where are the cylinder timing marks, are they on the flywheel? I haven't had it apart in awhile.

Put the timing light on your motor and point at the two vertical lines on the magplate.
Then you will see the mark on the flywheel.
There are 2 marks , 180 degrees apart.

Professor, when I line up the marks on the flywheel in between the two on the magplate neither of the points rest on the highest point of the crankshaft that says "top". Can the mag plate mounting screws be put on in the wrong spots to throw this off, or am I missing something simple?

This thing is called a magneto( magnetic fields ) for a reason !
It means that points must open when mark on flywheel is between the marks on mag plate.
This gets you maximum spark.---I can not see what your set up is, but that is what you are aiming for.
Points may not be exactly at 0,020" but that does not matter !!

Let me do my best to elaborate. Here is a picture of the flywheel with what I believe to be the timing mark circled. Also Included is a picture of right after I lined up the mark pictured on the flywheel with the marks on the magplate, the point tip resting against the crankshaft was just before the piece circled that has "TOP" printed on it. Do I set them at that location to .020? Thanks again, I hope the pictures help sort this out.

With throttle at idle it should fire near TDC
So use a screw driver to find TDC and then look for the timing mark.
Likely a " v " notch.

The mark I circled int he picture is a small v looking thing and it's cast out in the metal. Theres one just like it 180 degrees in the same spot so thats why I thought it was the mark. If thats not it where exactly can I look for it on the flywheel, the teeth, above them below?

Are you sure the problem is timing, and not a lean low speed jet setting? I've witnessed more than a few people adjust the low speed jet in a barrel, or at the lake in neutral. Should be done running in gear, just up from idle. In other words, under load.

I have not set it under load and that's great advice. However I'm pretty sure I also have a timing issue as I usually get a backfire or afterfire or whatever it is for a two stroke when I first start it.

Sounds like classic symptoms of a motor that is running lean !!
You need to hook up a timing light and check to see where you are as far as timing is concerned.

A back fire or coughing is most likely to lean on the carb. Turn the needle in till it just seats dont force it. Then trun it out 1 and a 1/2 turns. Start the motor and adjust a 1/4 either in out out to get a smooth idlle. You can set the high speed jet 1/2 turn out and go from there.

Setting the ignition timing on the old 2-cylinder OMCs is pretty simple. Just set the point gap at .020" with the point cam rider aligned with the crankshaft keyway. Voila! Done.
