TOPIC: 1957 Golden Javelin 35 Problem

Had the '57 North American boat out last weekend and after a while it wouldn't shift out of reverse. Any thoughts on the what the cause is and how to repair it.

What position do you have your throttle at? If too high a throttle, it won't shift. Also, if you have replaced the water pump impeller, did you get the shift rod tightened properly? It is under the smallish 2 screw cover plate on the lower unit.

Before you go taking any thing apart on the motor, remove the cable and try sifting it by hand...try using the control box with it loose form the motor

You may want to turn the prop with your foot while trying to move the shifter leaver....back back and forth only ....not hard enough to turn over the motor

Let us know how this test works and we can go from there

Dave K, thanks for responding. The throttle is all the way back and I have not replaced the impeller. We had driven the boat for a while and stopped at the dock and then backed out and the shifter would move but nothing in the motor seems to move.

Talltexan, thanks for your response. I will try this today. The shifter seems to move freely from throttle back to motor, but the rod that goes down into the motor doesn't seem to move anything.

On the ron that the shift handle is bolted to either outside or inside may have come lose. If either one has come lost the shift rod will not mover up or down. In the digram here look at part 34. you may have to zoom in to see it better but check that rod.
