TOPIC: electrically dead 70hp

electrically dead 70hp 13 years 4 months ago #38453

I just picked up a g3 with a "dead" motor. Guy has had it for 12yrs and it always ran perfect, was out on the river 2 weeks ago cruising along and it just shut off. Electric choke works but starter etc is dead. Local Marina told it it was likely the stator so he bought a new one but, got the "I'm pregnant" from the GF and she decided he should sell. With that said, what do you guys think the problem is?

70hp evinrude unsure of year.

Is this a 3 or 4 cylinder motor ?????
Dead / faulty battery.
Bad starter
Not sure why anyone would buy new parts without testing the old.----Stator has nothing to do with it " not cranking "
Stator charges the battery and provides pulse for newer ignition depending on the model #

went out and took a quick look...

1975 3cyl and its a 70hp, I know he said that but I had 75 stuck in my head.

It came with a complete locked up donor motor so I should have plenty of working parts.

Look for a " nuetral start only "----safety switch.

Ive been looking on the parts diagrams... where is the neutral safety physically located on this motor? I found it on the wiring diagram but thats it.

It is in the control box.

In fact I had that trouble once last year.
When troubleshooting at home, I discovered the shifter handle wasn't clicked into neutral all the way.
I felt stupid, but glad it was no $ to fix, and the kicker got us back to the dock.

Also, I believe there is a small in-line fuse in the motor-end wiring harness, near the starter solenoid... Check that...

He says choke works ?
Not the wee fuse then.
Find / bypass the switch in the control box to test starter.

Check for:
-good battery
-check voltage where battery cables connect in engine
-do you get a click from solenoid when you try to start? If not you have a bad solenoid or no voltage to solenoid. Could be neutral start switch in control box, wiggle throttle as may not be fully in neutral
-try jumpers direct from battery to starter, bypassing the solenoid, crank now?

I ran down and got the key from the guy... If I told the guy the problem I bet he would feel stupid. Once I got the key I hooked it all up and found it just as described. Quick trouble shoot and I realized that the control box would not go to neutral or reverse. Pulled the box to the garage, disasembled and found that it had "skipped" and locked itself up. I put it back together, hooked it all up and fired the motor.

I'm going to play around with it but, I think I'm going to be looking for a new controls.
