Hi,

I'll be picking up my "new" Evinrude Playmate later this week. This one has been in a private collection/museum for 10 years. The owner is thinning the herd and this one is mine! Gray and orange combo with black top. Very little wear and no butchering, cutting or modifications.

I'll post some photos when I get out on the water.

I used to have a 1966 19' Johnson with the 4 cyl. 120 hp Chev. Got rid of it many years ago to go sailing.

Now I'm retired and was looking for a project to fill up the shop, so CL yielded up a 1964 Evinrude Sport 16. I'm just getting ready to glue the new transom in. It will be powered by a 1964 75hp Starflite V-4.

Hi,

Does anyone have an Owner's manual for a 1965 Evinrude Playmate? If so would you be willing to scan it and post it, or send me a copy?

Thanks,

Todd

I finally have possession of the Playmate 14' and matching Evinrude trailer. This weekend is water testing and photo taking. More to follow!

I still do REALLY need an owners manual so I can figure out how to adjust the convertible top correctly.

They have everything but......

but thanks!

Information on the 14' boats is far more rare than the larger boats.

The 14-footers are less common, they were made for fewer years

Well there it is in water!

Runs great. The choke is a little temperamental.

It seems awful loud compared to most other V4s I've owned. Almost like there is a gasket missing between the exhaust port in the motor and the out drive. Ideas?

Also, I have a propeller where I could pull 9 water skiers. I need to put the prop with more pitch on there. It doesn't exceed the maximum RPM, but it spins up very high without really turning that into foreword movement. It will top out at 31 MPH at 4500 RPM. It is very fun to drive and extremely stable in the water!

If someone will please explain how to post a photo beyond the obvious, select the image to include and assume it will be, I'd be glad to hear.

The choke has an auto position, but I still need to hit the choke switch on engine start.

The boat will be LOUD. That is the nature of the DU. I have never experienced one in an OMC boat. Perhaps they used a bit more sound deadening material that Shell Lake, but it will be loud.

I run an 11P prop and get 31 to 32 MPH. I get good overall performance and can pull a skier no problem. Slalom is another story. Boat performs well even with 4 normal sized guys in it. My tach has failed, so I can't tell you max PRM.

That is what I discovered too. You have to nurse the manual choke to get it going. Then it runs fine. Obviously with any "new" old device there is always a learning curve as to how to run it.

The prop that is on here now is a 10 x 9-1/4. My tach still works, some. It does not react right away but is will zero in on the correct RPM as you hit enough waves. Alone in the boat I could easily red line the motor with that prop. With 3 in the boat it will run 31MPH at 4500 RPM.

After running it more, I find it odd that it does not shoot ANY exhaust out under the water. All exhaust comes out of the small hole in the back of the vertical drive. No water.Just exhaust. A very good stream of water shoots from the coolant monitor hole, and I can see small nodules of unburned oil bubbling up from the under water exhaust port, but no exhaust. Maybe that's normal, but I seem to recall from when these were popular that water sprayed out of the hole in the back, perhaps providing some muffling as well.

Anybody know who might be a good repair shop for the tachometer?

I've had a number of these V4s in outboard form. Some are screamers like this one and some are as quiet as a wet sponge. I have a 61 Evinrude 75 HP that is so quiet you'd swear it were electric. We had a 60 Johnson 75HP that was a real screamer just like this one. I've heard identical motors of both kinds displaying the annoying noisy qualities or the very quiet qualities. So now I have a mission to discover why some are loud and some are quiet.

OK......This is bugging me.

The designer's concept for the roof is not what ended up on the boat.

I'm sure they had their reasons. Like needing the bows to also fold and store in a logical manner, but the fact is Stevens design looks way better than what was produced. The other thing is, the roof is too long on the boat. You can not board without crawling under the roof. Most tops end sooner to allow boarding aft of the roof.

Neat! Where did you find the "concept" drawing?

I can't help wondering if engineering re-used parts from the sweet/sport '16 canopy
(I suppose comparing part numbers would tell), and/or the vinyl has shrunk!

I seem to recall the back overhang of our Sport '16 cover didn't lay flat either, and
that was when it was less than ten years old.

I remember the OMC 17 ft boat with the V-4--88 / 90 HP 2 stroke in them.
Would do maximum 32 MPH.
I know of one converted to run with a V-4 outboard on the transom--115 HP --1970 model and speed went to 42 MPH , being able to adjust tilt angle made a huge difference.

I don't recall where I found the concept drawing. It was on the net, either on a Brooks Stevens site or buried deep in the archives of one of the OMC boat sites.

You can adjust the trim on a DU, but you do it standing on your head and with wrenches. ;)
