I am keeping an eye out for a 125 to 140hp motor for my project. I am kinda confused on one point.

Was the bubbleback any motor over 115 or only the 140?

Were do the 125 to 135hps fit in. When folks are talking about these motors they seem to group the 85 to 115's together and then mention the bubblebacks making me think that it would be the other models over 115.

Am I right?

I missed one on Dallas craigslist the other day on an old 18ft trihull. Good compression and wanted the boat gone for 300.00.

I hate it when work gets in the way of a good hobby.

BB back came out in 73 on the 135 HP ----went to 140 in 77 I believe.---Only on those till the later propshaft rated motors.
Also found on the 110 / 115 HP motors ( propshaft rated ) in later years. The 85 / 90 HP motors had smaller intake ports.
Go to
shop.evinrude.com
And compare parts in all the pretty pictures.

Thanks. Im thinking early to mid 70's to stay kinda period correct.

Try and stay away from the 73 model.
Nothing internal will fit that motor from other years.
74 uses the same pistons as a mid 90's crossflow V-4

To heck with the "period correct"! Get a good reliable late model crossflow V4 and stick your old hood on it! I have a 1983 Johnson 90 on my 1976 18-footer and I stuck a 1976 85hp hood on it to keep the motor looking vintage. I could have gone further and painted the lower to match, but you can't see it unless you're climbing the swim ladder, so I didn't...

Most of the Johnrude crossflow hoods will interchange throughout their run, beginning about 1973. Before that, Johnson had a different shape to their belly pan, so the hoods were unique to the Johnsons. Evinrude had the same belly pan shape through their run once they went to the "square" shaped hoods in the late 1960s. Or you can just paint a late model one up and have a sign shop make you some vintage look decals...

The later CFV4s will have the more reliable ignition (with cheaper replacement parts), better - and more readily available - power trim unit, better carburetion (better idling and starting), no electric or hydromechanical shift to deal with, etc. Stick with anything newer than 1980 to get all of the above... The 115/110 CFV4 from about 1985 on up is essentially the same as the earlier 140, complete with bubbleback exhaust...

True the 79 and up had the same center main bearing as the V-6
