TOPIC: Outdrive identification

Outdrive identification 14 years 8 months ago #3407

HI, im very new at this, and need to replace the prop shaft on my Outdrive. The motor is the 155 HP buick V6, the boat is 1968 Johnson Reveler. Folks who have seen pics of the drive claim that that it must be an earlier model drive ( 1967? ) Anyway, i need to find out how to find the right propeller shaft to replace the one that was claimed my a tree stump today. Thanks for any info!

If it is the big solid one piece lower unit then it is readily available used.
This unit was used up untill 77 I believe and all were the same no matter which engine.
Now some of the earliest units used a smaller ( 2 piece assembly ) and they used the same parts as the V-outboard at the time.
At any rate there are lots of used propshafts availabe for either style
Picture ?

If i was to take a guess, i would call it a 3 piece. IN that there are 3 medium size component: The lower drive, the exhaust housing, then the upper drive. The lower drive bolts to the exhaust housing via 6 visible bolts and 2 more hidden ones. The upper unit bolts to the exhaust housing via 4 long bolts on the top, visible from just looking at it. Ill add some photos tomorrow.

Just need a picture of the lower unit where the propshaft is.
Someone may well have put a different than original unit on there.

That is the standard lower unit for the electric shift OMC sterndrives from 120 HP to 245 HP up to 1977. A used propshaft should be easy to get depending on where you are.

A local guy has an entire lower unit for $200. IM not sure if its identical, but he says they are interchangeable, any truth in this? Swapping the lower unit itself would take me 5 minutes, rebuilding the drive with new propshaft would take me... ? who knows.

Pick up the spare for $200 ( cheap ) considering the price of all the goodies in there.
You can than take yours apart to learn should you need to overhaul the donor unit.
