I'll need to remove and dig into the lower unit of my '64 40hp Lark. From what I've heard, the springs are probably stuck (rust?) to the shift magnets so that it acts like it's in both forward and reverse at the same time with no power applied.
Is it a simple enough job for someone mechanically inclined to fix? (I've replaced clutches on K-cars, nasty job to do.) Does it require any special Evinrude tools?

The " old wives tales " just won't go away.
Just take it apart to see what is really wrong in there.
Nothing special as far as factory tools required to take it apart.
