TOPIC: Gas tank Questions

Gas tank Questions 13 years 10 months ago #24775

I have two questions; one on a source for old style johnson/evinrude pressurized tanks, the second is on repairing the newer style (post 1960)portable Johnson/evinrude/omc pickup units.

I have three small 5 1/2, (2) 15 hp 1956 Johnson outboards. Is there a source for the old style pressure tanks? I have been watching ebay and craig's list. Did not know if there was a place to buy just the tanks without fitting/handle set up. Tanks have developed leaks

On the newer post 1960 tanks. I have a couple that weep/leak gas when underway around the gas tank fitting. Looking at the exploded drawing of the pickup unit I can see two "O" rings that I suspect are the problem. Question is how do I get to them. The drawing shows a couple of plugs that hold them in. Does anyone know how to get these plugs out?

Drill a small hole in the plugs and then pry the plugs out.
Replace the o-rings and install new plugs.
Used to do this for people while they waited ( customer service it was called 40 years ago )
Now when I ordered the parts the dealer said " i just sell people new tanks "
You could always tell there was a problem as one pin would stick out further than the other.

Thanks, where do I find the plugs and "O" ring? Are they dealer items or could I find them at Nappa or big box?

Any OMC / BRP dealer should have them " in stock "
They used these tanks for many years.
shop.evinrude.com
has the part# I am sure.
Order 3 plugs in case you mess up the first in your repair.

You could always convert them to single line like this.

There is also a really small O-ring where the pin comes out of the housing.
If leakage is persistant replace it too.
I ordered parts to repair these tanks one time and the dealer said
" what are you doing that for , I just sell people a new tank "
