Hi yall. Does anyone know for sure if a lower unit gearcase from a 1982 Evinrude 60 will fit a 1986 Evinrude 50 horse? I got a 50 recently that has a smashed gearcase and I just found a blown '82 60 horse. They look the same to me... but I dont need another busted motor laying around if I cant use it. Thanks!

I am pretty sure they will swap around. Parts list shows they use the same housing, but the driveshafts have different numbers. Could be a subtle change. I think the dimensions and spline count are the same, which is the important part.

On the 3 cylinder motors they are the same.
Now when you get into a 50 HP commercial model ( 2 cylinder ) they used a 3 cylinder gearcase with a 50 HP input driveshaft.
Those do not bolt up!!
Model #'s always help.

Thanks Professor. Yeah the ones I have are the same. I ended up buying the '82 and I had the '86. My '86 looks like they hit something really hard and then tried filling the hole in with jb weld. There may not be anything wrong with it, but it looks really bad. I'll upload some pics sometime this weekend.

The 82 and 86 2 cylinder ( non commercial ) are certainly the same.
Not the strongest most robust units for a 60 HP motor.
Repairing outboards since 1968 !!

FYI - I have an empty gear housing for a 2-holer of that era. I might be interested in your busted up unit as I might be able to combine the two for a good one...
