was the 28 HP Speeditwin ever a tiller outboard? Is it a pain in the butt to convert? I would assume 1963 vintage 18 HP tiller might work if the conversion can be done.
Thoughts anyone?

Hi Jim,
The 18hp tiller would NOT work. You would need the tiller handle and gear/shaft assembly from any of the Johnrude Big Twins dating back to about 1955. The gear/shaft assembly takes the place of the thumb throttle and cover (with the slow/shift/fast markings) and the tiller handle would mount where that cover is mounted.

Here's a pic of a '57 Johnson 35 with the tiller mounted... These tillers were found on Johnson and Evinrude 25, 28, 30, 33 and 40hp models up into the 1970s.

cool thx. am watching some of the gears on ebay just need the rest of the parts I guess.
I picked up a little lyman 13 leader so I want to run the 28 on her with a tiller set up and I have a 1960 Merc 400 with a tiller set up that I also want to run on her if the mood strikes me.
That's how I roll baby!

There is a book called "Cheap Outboards" by Max Wawrzyniak III that covers converting the Big Twin remote motors to tiller control. Great book for anyone with an OMC motor from 3 to 40hp.
