TOPIC: 74' Johnson 70 HP No Tell Tail,Why?

1974 J0hnson 70 HP Model 70ESL-74M

Why no Tell Tail (pee hole) or temperature gauge?
Motor runs fine, so how do you tell if it's pumping H20 correctly ?
I searched for a knock out plug in block to insert a tell tail hose or temp gauge but could not find one.
Was told that this your Johnson came without "Tell Tail" is that correct

We had a 74 50 HP (same design but 2 cylinders) and no tell tale. I believe they came a year or 2 later.
You will see an exhaust/water spray mix out the exhaust relief ports if it's pumping.
Also, there is an overtime warning horn in the control box too.

I bookmarked the link and I've going to install a tell tail.
Makes me feel more confident to see that the motor is pumping h2o , rather than trusting an electric horn warning.

The tell tail mod is the first thing i did to my project before I even put her in the water the end of last summer. 1971 Johnson 50. It is really easy. I spent more time looking for the barbed fitting that would work for me than to get it done. the thing that will surprise you is how thin the wall is there when drilling through the block. Well it did me anyway. I wanted a 90 degree barb but couldnt find one in nylon at my local stores so I went with a straight. With the wall so thin where you drill through the top of the block, I was nervous to use a brass fitting. I figured that using a nylon one would give the block a chance if I did anything stupid and knocked it with something. If I was to do it again on a different motor, knowing how thin the block is, I would pull the head and drill it there instead of the block. I didnt want to remove the head at the time to be able to see how far I was drilling.

There's a plastic 90-deg 1/8"-NPT fitting that was used on small Johnrude Twins, among others.
