TOPIC: 57 Johnson 35 HP fuel pump

57 Johnson 35 HP fuel pump 14 years 4 months ago #13365

My 57 Johnson 35 HP has a fuel pump, added by a previous owner.

Behind the fuel pump is a "gasket" of fiberous material. It is not rubber. It broke in half the other day. Is this piece necessary for proper operation of the motor? Do I need to replace it? If yes, what is it and where can it be obtained?

That peice that broke off is not sealing anything just as long as the rest under the fuel pump is in tack it should be sealing under the fuel pump. If you need another gasket for under the fuel pump you can make one easy from some thin card board. Draw the outline of the gasker sealing area cut it out and punch the holes the same size. It looks like somebody made that gasket way to big in the first place because I have never seen one like that on any of my motors.
I have always been told if it works don't fix it.

I don't think that "gasket" seals anything. It's probably a vibration or heat shield for the fuel pump. You could replace it with almost any gasket material.
