TOPIC: 59 Johnson 50hp alternator ?

Got a 59 Johnson 50hp. Can I hook up and alternator? If so where do I get one? It has electric Start. But I would like to have an alternator hooked up to help out. From my Google searching I seen one on eBay that sold that looked like it bolted into the hole on the opposite side of the starter

Welcome aboard! So that hole you see on the other side of the motor, that looks like another starter would fit, is for a generator. They are as hard to find as hens teeth and if you do find one it will probably cost you and arm and a leg. I have a '59 Evinrude Golden Jubilee 50hp "Fat Fifty" and have the same empty space. I don't know if you can adapt an alternator to work or not. Maybe someone who had can jump in here.

I wonder if a generator from a Big Twin would fit. I won't ever run my '58 Starflite enough to need a generator, but am intrigued...

BTW it looks like the V4 and Big Twin generators are the same except for bracketry.

Last but not least, attached is a wiring diagram for an electric-shift Big Twin with alternator. Of course the pertinent part of the diagram is the alternator connections.

Maybe you'll luck out and find a relay box on Craigslist or eBay from a generator motor; it'll have the regulator mounted along with all the wiring.
